*VER3* American Idol Song marcblack30, Tim W, me

Post by deantaylor » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:52 pm

This was our entry for the American Idol Songwriter contest, but ... it seems there is no contest. lolTell us what you think of the song. Songwriting comments welcome. Marc is working on the mix now. Any thoughts on his current mix? Since there is no contest, how would you pitch it? Is it a good pitch for any of today's pop or rock artists? Will it make a good film-tv pitch?ver3 (4/27)IT'S GONNA HAPPEN TONIGHThttp://marcblackwellmusic.com/MusicTestDrive.htmlThanks,Dean, Marc, Tim---------------------------------------IT'S GONNA HAPPEN TONIGHT copyright 2009 Lyrics by Dean Brantley Taylor (ASCAP) Music by Marc David Blackwell (ASCAP) Vocals by Tim Wilsbach VERSE For many years I've walked a lonely road The only company I've really known Is my dream Trying to follow an invisible path Staggering toward this impossible task We never stopped. We climbed every wall If I couldn't walk, I'd somehow crawl Hoping all the way That someday I would say CHORUS It's gonna happen tonight For my dream and me We've finally arrived It's gonna happen tonight It's gonna happen tonight For my dream and me Fantasy comes alive And the whole world, the whole world will see It's gonna happen tonight VERSE This morning I awoke from heaven's sleep A voice had told me that I'll soon be seen With my dream People kept kicking my ethereal friend You'll never make that unreachable end But now they'll see, when I raise my voice Oh I'm gonna sing out loud rejoice When it gets revealed That, yes, my friend is real CHORUS BRIDGE Starlight, star-bright, throw a penny in the well Wishes come true Find a four-leaf clover, luck runneth over There are so few That's what it feels like CHORUS CHORUS copyright 2009

Hey Dean,Sorry to hear the Idol contest is off this year. For the mix, it started out strong with a full engaging sound. In the first verse I felt right away that the music was crowding the vocal, given its low register. It wasn't as noticeable in the later verse but the backing tracks did sound slightly muddy, so Marc might have to scoop out some space there. In the bridge the hihat in the right speaker sounded a little harsh.I think the song is well conceived for the purpose. It does seem in the Daughtry/David Cook mold and fits thematically for Idol. Given that "tonight/dream" theme, it might take you out of normal artist pitches, but there could be a TV/film listing that calls for something like that--I wouldn't be surprised to see it.Vince

hey guys--solid song, this mix is a bit crowded to me, and the vocal needs a bit of clarity, maybe the cymbals too out front and that might be crowding it/a bit too "tinny"i would personally like the bridge to be MORE different, not enough of a variation.some of the lyrics for today's pop (unfortunately IMHO) are a bit TOO "ethereal" and a bit too obtuse. chorus i think needs a bit more lift, and actually i'm no producer/engineer, but i'd "rebuild" this song, quieter up front, and add layers as you go. just my opinion though.i can hear this as a HINDER style tune, and perhaps with some cleaning up, pitchable to the long haired guy on the taxi panels who produces them--seem like a very good fit there.that's all this novice has...all the best, warren

hi Deantaylornice guitars on the introIt's a good powerful track but...I think U definitely need to cut the lows and some low-mids on the voice... it's messing wiht the mix...Good work...-Kel

Vince, Warren, KO,Thanks!! I think Marc fixed or improved the crowding/vocal clarity/muddiness problems. Tell us what you think of the new mix. Dean

Hey guys, What a bummer about the Ameircan Idol song contest. Eitherway I think you guys have a very current, well-thought-out song here. I've heard the mix and the vocals don't seem too crowded so you must have fixed that. I'm digging the chorus. It seems to have sufficient lift from the verse and a good delivery. I think you definitely have some film/tv pitches here. I think it definitely works for an American Idol pitch, but like Vince said above I think it's going to have a limited overall artist pitch window. But you never know. You need to find an artist putting out a debut album. Andy

that is a drag about the contest but you guys have a pretty daggone decent song for your efforts. I think the vocal in the first verse might be either too out front or needs to be "high passed" at a different frequency but that's a minor nit & just my opinion. There are a lot of listings looking for big positive rock songs, I'm sure you guys will get plenty of chances to pitch this!

Marc, Dean, Tim,Mix definitely sounds better. At 1:31, I found the first part of the 2nd verse to be almost unintelligible. Maybe that was for cool effect, but I was listening closely and noticed it.You've done a good job making room for the vocal, but I think I'd bring the instruments up a little in the chorus just for a bigger lift.Vince
