Virtual Sax!!

Post by mazz » Sun Oct 26, 2008 12:12 pm

http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/news.phpCheck out the video!Pretty cool stuff. I don't think sax players will be turning in their reeds any time soon but this thing sure sounds nice in a mix!!I have their trumpet library and it works really well as a lead trumpet in an orchestra or pop setting. These are the same folks that did the Garritan Stradivarius Violin and Gofriller Cello.Cheers!!Mazz

Nah, mine's still wet, and I haven't played sax for several years. I'm always interested in any good library that'll let me imitate an instrument that I can't either play or hire. (the list keeps getting shorter) I started as a sax player and it influences my lead guitar playing to this day, so trust me when I say that a real horn player will never be replaced by a set of samples, if only cuz the real guy can change articulations faster than you can blink. None of which makes this news any less intrigueing.

Hey Mazz!Yeah, just checked out both videos! They're both off the hook man! I likes! I'm especially interested in the virtual sax. Now maybe I can go back to doing some cool jazz tunes, and actually have something that really resembles a real sax. Gonna try and get my hands on both. Thanks for sharing.I-468

Ya, thats the best I've heard so far. Sax is hard to 'virtualize' but I'd be happy with that for now. Notice how much mod wheel he does for the vibrato. I don't think there's a simple 'play and record' version of sax, it's gotta have a multitude of articulation stuff to make it sound right. It's also very dry so with some reverb and coloration it would even be more convincing. Thanks.Elser

The trumpet is really good too. With a surprisingly minimal amount of controller movements, it responds really nicely and pretty realistically. As a lead trumpet, it really adds the zing that regular samples can lack. On top of First Call Horns, it really makes the sections "pop".I have a Yamaha breath controller but I haven't practiced with it too much. I think it's a great addition to these instruments. It doesn't work so well with EWQLO because it messes up the release samples but for these instruments it really does well. You do need a good reverb with these, they don't come with it programmed in but Kontakt has a real nice sounding convolution reverb so it could be added to these easily. I'm partial to the plate in the UAD-1 card for horns. Creamy sizzle!! MMMMMMMMCheers!!Mazz

Just got the word. At least 4 weeks as it gets encoded as a K2P by Native Instruments, until it's available to the masses. Ooooo! Can't wait!I-468

Yeah that's very impressive! This is close to indistiguishable from the real thing in a mix, when played/programmed by a skilled and musical individual...That technology is really where it's at right now, I'm glad they are coming out with more and more instruments that use it.What kills me is that it was invented by a leading Italian cardiologist...in his spare time! Definitely gotta go on my shopping list...
