I've been using a Vox Valvetronix amp since about 2001 and I still love it as do everyone I play with. The Tonelab has basically the same circuitry from what I understand and has a reputation for sounding great but has always been under the shadow of the POD. For home recording I use Amplitube 3, Guitar Rig 4 and Peavey Revalver. I think they all have their own strengths. To me Amplitube is the most versatile, but it's hard to beat Rammfire within Guitar Rig for a great crunch sound. Revalver may be the most realistic/tubey sounding but mine is a little buggy so I'm always a little trepidatious while using it.
Ok, all that being said, I hear the Tonelab sounds great!

Re: VOX Tonelab ST
P.S. I should add that the reason I like software amps is that I'm not married to the recorded guitar sound as I would be with an amp or hardware pedal. I find that tweaking the guitar or bass sound has very much become part of my mixing process.
