Wake Up Roman Charges

Post by wignelson » Sun Apr 19, 2009 12:47 pm

Forgive me if I've posted this before here. I did a search and didn't find it, so I thought you have never heard it.This is from a musical. Musicals have gone the way of the dinosaur, so you may just want to pass on this.If you are still interested, here is the basic story:Roman Charges is a day trader who goes to San Francisco each day on the Golden Gate Transit System bus out of San Rafael, CA.He is always asleep on the bus stop bench, still connected to his laptop and headset and cell phone and beeper and ipod. You see, Roman is so plugged in that he loses his life. He is so afraid of missing something that he misses everything. Now I've lost you, I know . . .But for the very few who have read this far here is the song:http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... =466533Wig

Wig once again I gotta say I really like your voice. Well crafted song and lyric. So there's 17 songs in this musical of yours? That's quite an accomplishment. Well done.

Hey Wig,I do remember hearing and commenting on this tune--surprised you didn't remember! It's quite an achievement to have completed a musical and I did enjoy reading your lyric book.On your other thread, I occasionally remind myself that my main audience for my music is myself. It brings me joy and if it brings me some money, well that's a bonus.Vince

Well done. Thanks very much, djb,Yes, there are 17 songs in A Feeling of Power. I think I posted the title song, I'll have to do a search. I hope to post a lot of the others here, not that I am going to submit them to TAXI.I'm not really sure how you shop a musical, but I don't think that the doors will open here. A lot of the songs are fun. That reminds me, I have to get to work and redo some of them. I'm glad you liked Wake Up Roman Charges. Notice his name appears on your cell phone bill. Wig

I did a search of Wake Up Roman Charges and came up empty, so I thought I hadn't posted it here. I must be getting old. Yes, I know what you mean about writing for yourself. I usually write something because I want to hear it and no one else has written it. Funny how that happens.Good luck with your tunes. I'm looking forward to hearing more of them.Wig

OK Wig, as a writer of unproduced musicals (though the most recent came close), I offer some trade facts, possibilities and the odd bitterly learnt lesson:Trade facts first:1) a thermonuclear explosion is the only thing that can destroy more wealth in an evening than a musical which flops.2) due to 1), no-one is going to take on a musical commercially unless the whole thing is remade over to the point of being unrecognisable to its original author.3) due to 2) no-one is going to risk any money to support an unknown author no matter how compelling the music and play.4) The musicals world is actually very small, and almost a closed circle5) You can modify 3) and get into 4) if you're young, good looking, obsequious and can amuse a bored multi-millionaire or similar patron (state governments will do).6) The world is full of good, never-to-be-produced musicals! They're trade facts. True down here, and my NY contacts tell me true up there. So shopping it in a commercial sense is not going to yield anything (and you're right, TAXI doesn't service that part of town anyway). So, what does one do? Basically, decide what you want out of it. Just fun? Cover expenses? Cover expenses with enough profit to mount another?Just fun: you can always put it up on youtube, or as a radio play on myspace now that they allow 10 "songs" (gives you nearly two hours if you're cunning) you will get an audience, some of whom will cheer. The Internet Opera had some 30-40,000 downloads before it finally vanished. But, didn't generate any money.Cover expenses: produce and direct it it yourself, get together unpaid but fed and watered actors, singers and band and stage it where help is available. Here, it would be the Adelaide Festival of Arts Fringe, in the UK the Edinburgh Fringe, must be equivalents in the US. I contemplated doing that next year with Cassandra, but it would destroy my day-job (no-one would ever hire me again..)Make a moderate profit; as for "cover expenses" but PAY the leads and get a professional director.Oh...and a tip: steer well clear of anyone offering to "help" you get your musical into production, especially via internet websites.... I didn't, when I first started out, and it cost me badly, for no gain.
