washed up and done for

Post by Gerry » Wed May 02, 2012 9:12 am

That was me last week. This week I got 2 forwards. It was a listing that went directly to the listing party, so I guess that means I skipped round 1 and made it to round 2? It's my first forward so I'm really not sure. I'm an old singer songwriter and not very familiar with how TV, Movie and other media opportunities actually work.

QUESTION: What should I expect? Say they actually use 1 or both songs, will they contact me? Is it "hurry up and wait?"

Regards,
Gerry

The songs: Blue Dress & Another Man

The Listing: Y120324BL
Hyper Well-Connected Music Publishing / Licensing Company needs Blues SONGS for its catalog -- both Contemporary AND Vintage -- for MULTIPLE Film & TV placement opportunities. This Music Supervisor owned company specializes in placing music in background SOURCE scenes (bars, restaurants, coffee shops, etc). Quoting the company, "We need Mid-Tempo Songs with a great groove that can lay nicely in the background of a scene and under dialogue. Songs that are too fast and busy, or too slow and languid will NOT work in these contexts. We also do NOT need songs that display a lot of guitar virtuosity. It tends to get in the way of the dialog. We're NOT looking for the world's most impressive guitar players. We need songs with a great groove that work well in the background. No LYRIC RESTRICTIONS APPLY, with the exception of NO profanity please." If you've got what they need, this a great chance to get your BLUES SONGS placed in Major Broadcast Network and Cable TV Hits! Broadcast Quality is needed (excellent home recordings are fine). You must own or control 100% of the rights to the Masters and Compositions. NO COVERS, please! If your song(s) are used, you'll get a 50/50 split on the license fee, keep 100% writer's share, and keep 50% of publishing. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, and don't forget to include your lyrics. ALL submissions will be screened on a YES/NO basis by the LISTING PARTY HIMSELF. NO FULL CRITIQUES. ALL submissions must be received no later than 10am (PST), FRIDAY, March 24th, 2012. TAXI #Y120324BL

Hey Gerry -

Congrats on the Forward! That tells you you are doing things right. Keep up the good work.

What happens next is you submit tracks for the next listing. We have a saying around here, write, submit, forget. It can take months or years to hear back from a forward. I haven't heard back from my first forward yet over a year and a half ago, but I did get a deal with another library from a forward back in December last year. You never know. The best you can do is celebrate your forward by getting another one, and another... eventually you will get contacted.

cheers

Nahhh, Young and Fresh if over-rated. Look for the Old and Trustworthy button ;)

You got a forward on a listing that was screened by the person a screener would have forwarded to...
ALL submissions will be screened on a YES/NO basis by the LISTING PARTY HIMSELF.
so imho. The wait won't be that long before you get offered a contract seeing as the person you NEED to impress in order to get the contract... you DID impress. A forward is a moot point here as he's not forwarding to himself... he is himself lol. SO he gave the thumbs up and imho, it's only a matter of time before he gets to your name on the list and contacts you. He only took it with the intention of signing you to his company.

NOW... if he only offers a contract once someone is interested in using your song(s) then it could be a long wait.

Good Luck, may you get MANY placements!!!!

To rnr

I kinda thought I slipped around round 1 I just wasn't sure. I feel pretty good about it. Actually it's the only one I've pitched, that when I clicked submit I said to myself "you're gonna hear from them."

"
he is himself lol.
reminded me of a strange conversation I had with BMI

I'm self published. I called BMI the other day and asked if I needed an actual signed contract between me the songwriter and myself the Publisher. I knew it was pretty much a stupid question but better stupid than sorry. BMI said "only if you don't trust yourself."

HA! Not a bad answer huh? Something tells me she had been asked that question a few times.

Congrats! A forward whereby the listing party did the screening themselves is always a good one! :D

You really never know if and when you'll be contacted. Although the odds are higher if the listing party did the screening themselves, for a large variety of reasons you might not be contacted. (But you might!) The listing party’s priorities can change, they found all they need without your track, etc… all the real world stuff that happens in this industry. Also, some listing parties will screen at Taxi as a first round screening and narrow down more later…

I’ve had forwards like this (screened by the listing party) where I was contacted within days or weeks. And others where it’s been many months and I haven’t heard anything. Some members will tell you about getting a call 1-2 years or more after a forward.

So stay cautiously optimistic and realistic. And keep writing and submitting!

Best

To kc

Old and Trustworthy I can definately do. Unfortunately there's not and "Old and Trustworthy" Genre listing. Got to wait a little longer for the right listing, but obviously they are there from time to time.

Casey,

Thanks for the info. I've been doing this writing thing a long time! Over 3000 songs written and I'm just now getting good at it. I've learned to stand outside my stuff and look in as a stranger, (no ego, nothing personal) be patient, be optimistic and be a little leary of opportunities that come too easy and look too good. The last being the reason I'm asking questions.

Thanks!
Gerry
