Waveform Tracktion not acknowledging MIDI sustain pedal..

Post by Tunesmith » Mon Apr 02, 2018 1:59 pm

Hi All,

I can't seem to find the setting in Tracktion Waveform DAW where I tell it that I am sending CC 64 sustain notes to it. I know it's not the keyboard controller or the plugin in..Anyone using Tracktion can tell me where this is?

WHen I press my sustain pedal (hold pedal) nothing happens.

I have sent this to Tracktion support as well but they sometimes take quite while to get back to me and I needed to be able to do this today!

Thank you!

Linda C

try switching polarity switch on sustain pedal if it has one. click the A (automation track) choose sustain and manually draw it in
0-63= off, 64-127=on if you are in a hurry and don't have time to further troubleshoot.

Hi Len,

Thank you for your suggestion.. I did hear from Tracktion support but they only informed me on how to see the CC 64 message which I knew..

I sent the below back to them..

"It appears the messages are being recorded but I don't have the sustain effect while playing the controller or on playback via the plugin. I have tried different plugins as well.

I have a link here to a short video in my MIDI editor. Maybe this will shed some light on it for you and you can further help.

Thank you,
Linda"

So guess I will see what they say or you or anyone else. I have sold all my synths, etc..I have one digital piano I could try but it is heavy..

Thanks again and hope you're feeling good!
Linda

linda, from what it appears, there is an orange line that goes up and to the right, somewhere between 64 and 127? that would be on
and another orange line that goes right and down, possibly 63 to 0? that would be off. if you aren't pressing the pedal until the second line 63-0, that means when you press the foot pedal, it is turning the sustain off, and when pedal is not depressed, it is on,
which is backwards from what you want, and if there is a polarity switch on the pedal, you need to change the polarity, if it's on +
you need to change to - or if it is - you need to change to +.
what make and model is the sustain pedal? that may shed some light on how to change polarity if there isn't a switch.

you could also manually draw in the automation as well.

I suppose the reason for the polarity is that you have both a sustain and a damper pedal. it sounds like you are in damper mode.

Hi Len,

I have 2 different Yamaha pedals and tried both and they both did the same thing. So I set up a stand a carried my Roland Ep7 piano in, and using the larger Yamaha pedal, it works fine. So it must be something to do with my Kawaii K5. I Have used the K5 for a controller since 1989 when I bought it. But Waveform doesn't gibe with it as far as the sustain goes. The pitch bend wheel works fine tho..

Here is a picture of the pedals for what its worth..

Crazy..guess I will sell it..I'd rather not and keep using it but I need to be able to have sustain work..

Thanks for your input!

Linda

Do you have the manual for your K5? If not, you can probably find a PDF version on Kawai's site. Anywho, there's probably a setting in a menu somewhere to swap sustain pedal polarity. If not you can probably source a new pedal with a switch for $50 or less, possibly way less.

Hi Mojo and thank you. What I have discovered is the 2 piano vst's (DSK Grand, V Upright Piano) are not jelling with the K5. Sustain works fine on a flute Vst or strings..very odd. I will download another piano vst and try it soon.

I emailed Kawai and was put in touch with a retired K5 guy who replied right away. He thought it odd as well. He suggested the polarity thing as well..and checking send/receive setting for pedal hold. I did all that except polarity change. Last thing he wanted me to check was the Roland's CC info it was sending to see if it was CC64 like the K5. (The Roland does not have an issue)

I have put the K5 up for sale. It is quite the machine with its additive synthesis etc. I have Dr T's Caged artist K5 editor, 3rd party patch banks etc. I used it a lot for recording in the 80's/90's I bought it when I worked at Dr T's. Kawai gave us a super deal. I have been using it only as a controller for a long time so someone into synthesis could really utilize it more.
