Post by jdhogg » Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:09 am

Waves Renaissance Compressor
My goto comp.
Most probably used on more hits than any other compressor plugin,

On offer at $38 from $150 if anyone interested.

Also take a look at this list to see what a lot of pros use for DAW, eq. comp etc.

I use that plug so much! Also the rennaissance reverb is quite good. That's a great deal!

out of curiosity, what makes it better than the other compressors you use, and what do you use it on (i.e. vocals, guitar, drum, etc.)?

I've used it on everything. It's hard to get a bad sound out of it and it just seems to be good at "glueing" things together and making tracks play nice with each other in the mix. A solid all around compressor that i find myself going back to all the time.

I've been using the Massey CT4 and the UAD 1176 and LA2A but I may give the Renaissance comp a try, especially at that price. I just noticed that the IR-1L convolution verb was on for $25 ( down from $250 retail ) so I picked it up. I've never owned a convolution verb before but at that price I may as well try it!

What I have found is the ren comp if put over all your tracks that need a comp will give you a very good starting point for an analogue style feel.
ie slightly warm and dark ie how I remember well recorded vinyl sounding....great for vox, elec gtr etc

It is very low on the cpu so putting this on most tracks is not a problem.

Then replace where needed (eg drum bus or master bus) with character or accurate comps..........eg The Glue by cytomic (you should check that out) or any of the other great ones.

Comps range from adding as little distortion as possible to the character ones that simply add distortion by design + eq + sometimes even noise. I keep that in mind when choosing my comp weapon.

Also not well advertised is

http://www.wavesgtr.com/html/product_gtr_solo.html

The basic waves gtr sim for $18! :o

I bought the super tap and audio track.

Those comps are great. The ren is subtlely different not better or worse.

A big plus is when swapping projects it is very likely that partners have the ren comp.

yup and there's more great deals there as well ....

If you get the IR-L make sure you get the full library at http://www.acoustics.net/content.asp?id=20 as the basic plugin only comes with a few impulses.

Actually I found out that you can get the full GTR3 for 79$! And the full Musicians Bundle 1, which includes the Renaissance comp and much more for 49$, when registering a new account with Waves. That's a great deal.

I don't worry about the dongle, but I'm a bit concerned with Waves "programme" where you need to pay for updates every two years. I can't find any information what that'll cost me after two years, say if I get the Musicians Bundle. Does anyone have experience with the Waves program?
