What constitutes change or difference?

I apologize if this topic has been covered but I would like to know what constitutes 'change or difference'

Michael says that we work from our templates, but I'm not sure, if I am lucky enough to get an exclusive deal, how much I have to change my composition to qualify for another exclusive deal. Especially with a blues composition. Also, some things are gonna sound sorta like other people's things. Where is the line?
