I belong to a group called "Indieheaven" which specializes in helping indie artists stay indie. These folks are Nashville based and most have been involved with the industry for some time. They talk about this subject quite a bit, and make references to how much you will owe the label after the first project unless you are the next "hot prospect". I don't think artists think about how much work they have to do for the label, only what the label can do for them. Huge mistake. Most labels are looking for acts that are out there making it happen all by themselves.
