What to do if forwarded / selected?
Just a quick question -- What happens if a song you submit is forwarded and then selected for use? Do the artsits then enter a contract negotiation with the music library / publishing house? Also -- how would being affiliated (read: contracts signed) with a management company / publishing house typically affect my ability to use TAXI as a resource to submit material for listings?(My apologies if this has been covered before on the thread -- I searched and could not find it anywhere.)Thanks,Ian of Middle Distance Runnerwww.middledistancerunner.com

I'm actually asking about what happens after you are selected by the person/company that originally submitted the request to TAXI... what happens then?

excellent ... that's what i was hoping to hear. i submitted a few things a couple weeks back, and I just wanted to make sure that by submitting, I wasn't binding myself to whatever offer was eventually given (provided an offer was given, provided it was even forwarded) ...I'll sleep a little better knowing that after all is said and done, it is still up to the artist whether or not the song is licensed. Thanks,Ian

Also if you have not given away your publising rights, you can choose each license freely.

Re: What to do if forwarded / selected?
gitarrero -- you bring up another question i had about the "first release"the songs in question have obviously been recorded (because they were submitted), and they have also been pressed to a CD which has been self-released by my band. We're not on a label, and we're not affiliated with any publisher. We are also not yet affiliated with a PRO, but we are in the middle of taking care of all of that stuff ... the question is ... did we already blow our chances at "first release" ? if so -- what's the downside to that?at the risk of making this too complicated, it is my understanding that compulsory licenses come into play when you're talking about this stuff, although I still need to do my homework on that and figure out exactly what the situation is...

My understanding is that first release requires permission from the writers as part of that mechanical license agreement. After that, anyone can release the song as long as they pay the statutory mechanical royalty rate (currently 9.1 cents per song per CD in the USA)...What defines "release"? If it was offered for sale in any way it was released. Casey

Quote:excellent ... that's what i was hoping to hear.I had a forward once that I thought for sure was going to be our first placement. The evaluation sheet came back and we pegged straight 10's across the board - in every category and every song. The screener was so complimentary and they even said that the listing was theirs and that we were perfect for it.Never heard from them again. That's probably not what you're hoping to hear but a reality nonetheless...Just be positive and have no expectations...
