I love all of the Ibanez basses. Good sound with a great price. At your price range you could basically get whatever you want. I like to limit the amount I spend on individual instruments and build up my collection that way I can grab whatever instrument that I need for just the right sound. Of course I would love all vintage gear if I had the budget...

maybe its just me, but i like to go a bit old skool...that and i use a cort (Korean company) a4its nice live and for recording..a thicker, yet fast, neck.. and speedy funky runs can be done easily. active pickups for a HUGE bass signal/ and a tight high endwayy below your price range..but may be fun for you to test driveit at the local instrument store...Korean guitar companies have been making a good name forthemselves these days

Tuite, if you go the Fender route, I would buy it from a store as opposed to online. I have found that Fenders feel so deferent from one to another as far as action and playability and you will want to make sure it works for your taste. Good luck and enjoy the new bass!Marc

I'd second the recommendation for Ibanez Road Gear series. And I would recommend going for a six string model if that wasn't already a consideration. I have 4 string models, and I usually feel limited.ArkJack

That's why I made sure I had an assortment of 4 strings & 5 strings. My hands are not BIG enough to handle a 6 string cleanly enough IMO. But having a 5 string was definitely a must have for me. Just ta' be able to hit those lower ranges past the E is critical these days, I think. I'm not always crazy about tuning down either.I-468

The Lakland is known for it's tight, great sounding low B.

Yeah marcblack30,My buddy either still has or had a coupla of Laklands (I can't recall where he's at with basses these days. He changes basses like you & I change underwear. He's got at least a dozen.) But there was a bass shop located on about 130th & Cicero (they recently moved) and they sold nothing but top-o-the-line basses. My buddy took me there one time, and we spent hours trying out different basses. We both got our hands on a variety of Laklands, plugged 'em into some excellent amps (top-o-the-line I might add) and we were in bass heaven! Plugged into the right amp, these basses sound absolutely incredible! Just enough midrange, and plenty of booty when necessary! The feel & quality of the bass is SIMPLY MAHVELOUS! These things are no cheapies by any stretch, as you well know. That particular day, my buddy ended up buying one, and then a few short weeks later, he bought another one. Unfortunately, I couldn't participate. I-468

that sounds like a great time! let me know if you remember the name of the store, i would love to stop in sometime.i always wanted to stop by the Lakland shop and try to get an endorsement deal but never had the balls, i traveled with a Chicago based cover band for 10 years and always thought it would be cool to get some free shit.
