Re: Which software?
Quote:K, Creating a stable system took a year or so, and so many re-installs from scratch. I was just curious if you had Melodyne running as a plug-in, within logic, and I guess you don't. thanks for responding, I've learned more again!steveNo plug in here, but I have a work around to hear things in context. Cre8te is an 8 track stand alone so what I do is export all tracks as audio files in Logic then bring in the problem tracks and the foundation tracks to give me the context. The import functions of Melodyne allow you to import all 8 tracks at once. I would like to check out the plug in but like you said, once you get your system stable, experimentingis not the thing to do. It is good alternative and it will record and even has a mixer that you can insert plug ins into.

I love my beefed-up Intel Mac with Logic. I want to marry it, but I'm already married, so I can't.Watch out for the Curse Of The Universal Binary Updates, though...see my post on Sample Tank LE elsewhere in this land.

Re: Which software?
Quote:Sorry to be bumping an older thread. I saw some discussion of autotune and melodyne and I am seriously considering one of these. One of the things with taxi/dispatch is being able to get to broadcast quality quickly and both of these plugins seem to help a lot.Matto and Andre, I have been demoing Melodyne and Autotune, and Melodyne seems way out in front for specific fixes as well as creative opportunities. It sounds great. Are you using the plugin version? I don't see any benefits to Studio unless I am missing something really obvious. I don't see a lot of applications for doing autotune of multiple parts when I can just run melodyne on separate vocal tracks.Songwriter-I only use Autotune, but I've heard Melodyne and it indeed does sound great. If you're on Pro Tools HD as I am, it appears you need the Studio version for compatibility (though the plug-in version appears to support RTAS as well). If you're just doing pitch correction, I think it's a toss-up quality-wise...I'm quite happy with Autotune's sound as well. I think what separates Melodyne is its ability to quickly and easily manipulate pitches and timing for drastically altering melodies, which I would find pretty useful. This is mostly specualation on my part, though, so I'll defer to others who actually use the plugin on a regular basis.Andre

Re: Which software?
I have Autotune and Melodyne Cre8 (not the plug-in...yet...will probably get it within the nxet few weeks).Since it's a plugin, Autotune *can* be faster IF the tarck you have is close enough to use "automatic" mode. ATT in manual mode and Melodyne in "bridge" mode are about the same speed wise. The pitch correction quality of Melodyne is far superior; ATT is fine if you never have to correct farther than about a 1/4 tone and there are no scoops etc that need to be flattened out. Anything above that or more complicated Melodyne is far more transparent. Plus...you can do a lot more with Melodyne, such as lengthening/shortening notes, changing formants and the like. These days I only use ATT for "quick and dirty" fixes like scratch vocals etc. Any "serious" work I do in Melodyne. The one caveat is that I haven't used the plug-in version so I can't say how well it works and how reliable it is. I think Gunter just got the plugin so hopefully he will chime in.matto

This has been a paid advertisement from Melodyne.

Re: Which software?
Quote:As far as PC or MAC, generally speaking there's no reason to switch to MAC unless you wanna use a specific piece of software (DAW or otherwise) that's MAC only.mattoI would disagree with this statement because now that Macs are Intels they can runwindow if your feel the need. So not only can you run all the Mac and Windows software, you could run any Linux or Unix programs since OSX is based on Unix. So that would mac the Mac the most versatile. Remember if you get a new PC it will most likely have Vista on it. I am not sure you would want to do that since I keep hearing about people who are trying to get XP onto these Vista machines because of all the incompatibilities. Then there are the vulnerabilities which MS is not always on the ball with fixing. I heard of a recent one they had let go unpatched for 3months. If you really want that, go for it.Quote: Here's a dumb question: which is faster, a Duo 1.8ghz or 3.4ghz single processor? It would seem that the 3.4 would be. On the surface it would seem that way but the Duo is a dual core with both cores running at 1.8 ghz so technically the Duo is faster but in a real world sense they are about the same.

Re: Which software?
My 2 cents...Stick with Pro Tools, they have upped their midi and added some great new audio features you are not going to get in the other programs anytime soon. The other "must" have software, IMHO is Melodyne, with the new DNA, the possibilities are mind boggeling....stay tuned! Pun intended.

Re: Which software?
I too picked up an iMac for the wife to work on and its surprising how much can be done. FIlling up the RAM made a huge difference also. My "old" G5 1.8 single has lasted me 4 or 5 years and somewhere in there I maxed out the RAM and it continued its usefulness. SO for me the Mac platform has saved me at least one hardware upgrade over the years. This is one of those "tool of the trade" issues that is different for everyone but I think there are alot of powerful puters out there for similar $$$. My experience and others in my network have taught us to stick with what you know so that the learning curve is not too steep. Its just a terrible letdown to try and do something simple and "learning" how to do it over the course of multiple days... I would like my limitations be my composition and playing skills other than technology....Best of luck !
