will this get me into the movies?

Post by emilyfra » Sat Dec 07, 2013 4:00 am

I'm submitting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvnF-RoLMdQ

for the below listing. I don't know how others feel, but for me it is hard to be objective when looking at a listing. My illogical reaction is often 'Yeah - that fits' when a reality check might say the opposite. Maybe this time however....... I think it ticks one or two of the boxes, doesn't it? :?

MUSIC SUPERVISOR at a MAJOR FILM STUDIO needs Down-to-Mid Tempo SINGER/SONGWRITER SONGS with male or female vocals for use in a FEATURE FILM. He's searching for heartfelt and emotional songs in the general stylistic wheelhouse of artists like Wilco, Bright Eyes, and Laura Veirs. Here are a few songs to point you in the right stylistic direction for this pitch:Ê"On and On" by Wilco: http://bit.ly/1blQX1JÊ"First Day Of My Life" by Bright Eyes: http://bit.ly/1bnfsfZÊSun Song" by Laura Veirs: http://bit.ly/18q5fv0ÊHe's looking for bittersweet and reflective songs with an intimate, soul-searching vibe. Quoting The Music Supervisor: "We're really looking to pull on the heart strings with the music we choose for this film. I need songs about love and loss. Finding joy, only to have it taken away. Songs that question the meaning of life and our vey existence will work, too. This needs to be emotionally heavy. I don't want anything that's sugary or trite."ÊAcoustic-based piano and guitar songs with an engaging vocal melody and introspective storyline will work best. Please submit songs with Universal lyrics. Avoid references to specific names, dates, times, places, brands, etc.ÊThe estimated license fee for this is $1,000 - $5,000. This is a Direct-to-Music Supervisor placement, so you'll keep 100% of the sync fee and any applicable performance royalties. You must own or control 100% of the Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. Please do not copy or rip off the referenced artists in any way, shape, or form. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). All songs will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a person hand picked by the Music Supervisor. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 songs no later than Thursday, December 12th at 2pm (PST). TAXI #U131212SS

Sorry for this, but I realised that most of America was in the middle of the night when I posted! If there are no replies this time I won't do it again! Sorry!

Hi Emily.
Sorry for late reply to this but I've been travelling and have a lot of Taxi catch-up to do.

My two penn'arth:
I like what you are doing with this song but I have a couple of crits.

Yes, I think it fits the emotional requirement for the pitch, but to me some of the vocal is a little bit pitchy and I wonder whether it would have more impact and drama with just the voice and piano, without the drums, and the whole thing slowed down a bit?

It's a shame there's no full critique with this listing because brighter people than I would write far more helpful pointers, but these are just my first thoughts after 2 listens. Wishing you loads of luck,
Best
Steve

Thank you Steve. I actually have a version of the song similar to your description but I feel it is too slow. There may be something in the middle. Really good of you to comment.

I think the writing is excellent, and a great match for the listing, Emily!

"...looking for bittersweet and reflective songs with an intimate, soul-searching vibe."
Yes, that would describe this song, imo.

The vibe is similar to Laura Veir too, and your vocals are great, emotional and full of character.

On the mix, I think you started rushing your vocals a little after 42'sec. Du you play and sing at the same time, or do you overdub your vocals afterwards?

There was a little glitch on the last piano chord, that sounded unnatural. Hopefully an easy fix, but endings are very important for sync use, and it's very exposed here, so you should make it a priority.

Thanks Magne, that is very encouraging. I usually play and sing at the same time but when we added the drums I redid this one.

Cheers

Emily,

I think your song is on target for the listing. I noticed the same things that Steve and Magne noted, too.
