Windows Vista question

Hi, I started a thread a few days ago about getting a good quality Virtual Instrument pack and clearly EWQLSO was the winner so I have investigated that but now it seems that it won't run on Windows Vista which is a real shame as I've just invested in a brand new laptop with Vista on it, (thinking that the latest has to be the best - especially as it's supposed to be for media!) Can you confirm that this is correct? I think the time when it will be Vista compatible is coming, but how long is the wait?Now I'm thinking of using my old computer to run EWQLSO with windows 2000 but I will have to buy a load more memory for it first. But just need to be sure I have this right. Thanks for your advice guys.

I run Sonar and various plugins, including EWQLSO with no problem. I don't know who said that it doesn't run under Vista but I've encountered no problems with EWQLSO (and I use it a lot and a lot of it sometimes). My only concern was with my soundcard (no Vista drivers, no sound) but they had already released Vista drivers so no problem.Anyway, the rumors of my demise and EWQLSO not working under Vista are greatly exaggerated. When I was looking into getting a new computer with enough Ram, etc to run EWQLSO last January, I posted the specs of a computer for sale at Future Shop on the tech forum here. The advice was - 'yeah, this computer would be good - but not with Vista, your audio programs might not work with it'. I ended up getting a custom built computer (for not that much more money) with Windows XP Home.

Vista is for displaying high resolution graphics. If you want beautiful pics get Vista. If you want a fast computer and not an elephant of a program taking up all your memory, stay away from Vista.

My friend who runs a computer store tells me he will not build anyone a system with Vista installed, not until they bring it up to speed. He says they basically released a beta version of an operating system with a tremendous amount of unresolved issues and called it Good--he thinks it's scandalous. Meanwhile, XP is apparently still the best way to go at present if you are using a PC. I do believe Vista will come into its own in the near-future...but what a drag that they are using the paying general public to troubleshoot their operating system the hard way.

If you're referring to Aero, a function of Vista that "beautifies" the look of the desktop, folders and such, that's an option that you can turn on if you choose to do so but it's an option and wasn't the default in my system. And it doesn't have anything to do with how your pictures will look.Generally speaking, for most folks, I'd say stay with XP. Still, the horror stories about Vista are overblown. It's new, there's some things I don't like but I don't have any problems that I'm aware of. I don't like the annoying "are you sure you want to do this?... are your REALLY sure?... Just to be safe, let me ask you a third time if you're REALLY, REALLY sure". Basically, Vista treats everyone equally... like a moron. That can be turned off too but probably not a good idea for the casual user.Having said all that, the hardware I'm using has stable Vista drivers and my software is up to date. There's nothing that's keeping me from doing what I'd do using XP. I took the migration sooner rather than later because my computer blew up. If my computer hadn't blown up, requiring a new one, I wouldn't be using Vista. But, since I had to start fresh with a new computer, I chose a Vista clean install now to avoid a potentially messy XP -> Vista upgrade later. Bottom line from my experience with this... don't upgrade just to upgrade but if Vista drivers exist for your hardware, don't go through a long process of wiping out an existing Vista installation and purchasing XP because you heard that "Vista doesn't work". Vista work for me.I have two similar computers. Both have Athlon dual core processors. One runs XP pro, the other Vista Home Premium, 32 bit. I use Cubase and have to say that I prefer the performance on the Vista machine. You need to tweak both Vista and XP to get them to perform efficiently. I do suggest never activating the media center. Many of the new machines come with TV tuners and it's tempting, but leave it disabled. Anyway, my point is Vista as stable and runs all my software flawlessly. Lucky for me I'm poor and only have the sounds and effects that come with Cubase SL and Studio 4.However, if I were heavily invested in VSTis or plugs that would not run under Vista, then I'd stick with XP.Mikehttp://www.soundclick.com/fidgetyfeet

All my studio PCs run Win XP (well, my Dell P3 that I print labels on runs Win 98SE ). BUT, my home Toshiba 17" laptop came with Vista. The only problem I've had with it (I know, not a music app) is the email program SUCKED! (I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird, which is fine). But Vista IS very cool for photos. I really enjoy working on them with "Gimp" software (still free, I believe).But I digress. BUY A MAC! Ern
