Are you using breath control CC for Cinebrass? I haven't, so maybe that's why Cinebrass and I haven't gotten along?

I'll look into it tomorrow.

Yeah I am all over the mod wheel in Cinebrass, and I use the default out of the box mapping so the key velocity selects the length of the note, cc64 forces legato and cc1 is timbre.

Great food for thought, Andy. I may need to work that mod wheel, before looking for new samples. I didn't even realize there was a breath control CC!! It is that sense of movement I'm looking for, I think. You can always dial more body in for the instrument when mixing, to sculpt the sound to your likings. So, new samples may not solve anything.

Ok. I'm using the mod wheel too, I just thought it was controlling CC11 / expression. So, still not a fan of Cinesamples. :)

But since I have no limited choices, I shall spend more time with it and see if I can better make it work for me.

yup. that is when new gear doesn't help. gotta learn what all the stuff does in the stuff you have.

I will admit though that the simpler and more uniform the programming is across a range of instruments, the easier it is. Which is why I am SO not a fan of the East West stuff in general. Too complicated for this hombre.

That may just be me, but I find them hard to work with and hard to get a good sound from. I do have their Hollywood Winds which I like very much but that's the section or not solo instruments. I do not own orchestral tools.

For solo woodwinds I still like the Westgate instruments. I have their solo flute, clarinet, oboe, and bassoon, and use them quite a bit. They are a bit older, but I still think they hold up. I know a lot of people like the 8dio products a lot so you may want to check them out. And I also really like Spitfire Audio instruments.

Thanks Kyle, can you elaborate on what's not working for you with Cinebrass and what kind of music you are trying to do with it?

Andy, how do you find the Cinesamples tools are working in a mix. Can you elaborate on how you mixed them for the songs you posted?

I'm quite tempted by the winter sales where you can get both cinewinds core and cinebrass core for 499$. It seems good value, and it would save my wig to end up with a workable template. Their Hollywoodwinds have been on my shortlist forever, but I've been needing the basic stuff to create a suitable context for it.

Guy at Scorecast seems to recommend Cinesamples to his students.

this might seem super-lame, but most of the Cinesamples stuff is already panned to position, and has some ambience - so I mostly leave it alone. The cinesamples stuff also has Bricasti reverb in it that you can turn on and add to the basic sounds.

I often add a little of one or more of the 3 reverb template I use depending on the situation and what kind of blend I am trying to get with the rest of the mix.

I often high and lowpass some of the stuff, and sometimes a broad subtle boost to bring out more buzz (esp on the brass). I don't often compress it unless its pop kind of stuff.

I spend 95% of the time programming and finessing CC1, CC11, CC64, and note velocities, and 5% "mixing". By the time the piece is done almost the entire mix is in midi still.

Thanks, Andy! If you're happy with it straight from the box, it's gotta be good sounding. Spending most time on the composition and the programming would be the way I'm working as well. So it's good to hear that it is so immediate to work with.

It does get mixed reviews online, though, so counter experiences are welcomed as well.
