World of WanderWell, my kin have been there since the 1890sMining coal among the misty hills and pinetreesBut one day my heart sewed wings upon my bootheelsAnd they carried me from home across the fruit fields and orchards out westI won two grand on the Cowboys out in DallasThen blew it all on roulette in Caesar’s PalaceMet a singer by the Vegas Greyhound depotTold me he’d been buskin’ since his house was repoed and couldn’t care lessCos it’s a world of wander and undiscovered placesWhere crowds he's never sung to feel like an oasisO it’s world of wanderBreezes over rooftop gardens in poor ghettoesCall to me like winds through sweet magnolia meadowsAnd like wind through dresses on west Texas clotheslinesGhosts pass through lighthouse walls on New England coastlines and watch time sail awayWhether they harpooned for rum on ancient whalersOr they fired cannons at red-coated sailorsAll who raise sails know the seas are consecratedBarkeeps swear a fisherman still haunts a faded boat off Chesapeake BayO it’s a world of wander and undiscovered spacesWhere beaches I’ve never walked on feel like an oasisYes, it’s world of wanderI was sleepin’ in the shadows of saguarosWhen I wished the moon would find me home tomorrowWith fog-shrouded tree-tops, 4-H fairs and ShrinersCos sometimes I miss the whiskey laugh of miners with paychecks in their coatsRingin’ church bells, robin on a red brick chimneyLife there sings out to the lonely soul within meBut if someday grace finds me blessed and forgivenI hope I can drift the shorelines and fields of heaven on starry golden roadsLike a world of wander and undiscovered placesWhere mountains I’ve never walked on feel like an oasisO it’s a world of wanderA world of wander…©2007 Robert George
