Would this instrumental work as sync music?

Post by MJLeeman » Sun Jul 30, 2023 3:17 am

I have revised this piece several times. I have not submitted it to a Taxi listing, though it did originate from a listing where I went off on a tangent, so it didn't fit the criteria. Recently, I submitted the version of the track below to a professional who was critiquing possible sync instrumentals during a zoom course which I attended. The feedback was generally that the music went in different directions and would therefore probably detract from the visual action, so it would most probably not be readily usable for sync music. What I am seeking feedback on is whether this music might nevertheless have a place, maybe as source or theme music/some other use? For example, do I need to simplify it/keep it less varied? I can see that it doesn't work as a cue, but could it work as an instrumental, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance for any advice, suggestions etc. which would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Michael

What genre would you consider this track?

I don't see it as being useful in sync, for a few different reasons. The main thing is that this one track sounds like sections of four or five different tracks strung together... there is not a consistent theme or mood. The instrumentation is a little unique, some of the lead sounds are very distracting, which is a huge no-no for sync music. Need to stay out of the way of dialogue.

When writing for sync use, you should be targeting a specific mood or feeling, and keep the track simple throughout. Your track indeed goes in different directions, leaving the listener feeling a little uneasy about what is being heard.

The first few bars sounded like a Xmas cue

Then some Trap Hats came in but with a Funk guitar part ...but still with the Xmas like brass stuff in the back...so thats 3 different genres and I'm only about 12 seconds in.

It makes no difference what you call it : cue , instrumental, jingle , song etc.....if it's not working then calling it something else won't suddenly make it licensable. You've done the right thing and sought some Pro feedback so I would take heed of their advice that it doesn't really work for sync and just put it aside and write something else more focused.

Thank you Paulie and Cosmic Dolphin for your comments. It would appear that I am wide of the mark on this one. Maybe I will rearrange and repurpose this track in some way in the future. For now I am already working on the next project.

Cheers and thanks again
