There was a "soundtrack" released after the movie. I see a lot of the movie's fans really liked the soundtrack and felt it was consistent with the movie ... so I thought the listing company might have had this soundtrack in mind. But compared to what I've heard in peer-to-peer, I'm in the extreme minority on this one. So I didn't put my 2 tracks up in peer-to-peer, but I submitted them anyway.

Also, what does the term Underscore really mean? Often complete songs with melodies and vocals are used as underscore (see Robin's book). But underscore can also be the opposite - mostly FX with some music oriented bed, swells, and hits. In this listing it would have been helpful if Taxi had explained what type of underscore is needed.

CK, best luck with full-time composing! Jim

I had posted a comment to this forum but somehow it never showed up..

Anyway, I'm new to Taxi and this was the opportunity that finally pushed me to become a member.

It's true that the first film had no score, so I was just as confused as everyone else. The second film had quite an awesome score but at the same time it's probably not what they were looking for, but who's to say?

For me 'underscore' for this type of project would be something that doesn't interfere with the dialog but enhances the mood on screen... but even that's kind of vague. Sound design and musical elements could work here, but so could a lot of other things.

Trying to play it safe I did two more ambient type pieces and another track with more of a piano melody but didn't get too complex with it.

I guess we'll see what happens ;)

Good luck to all!

Welcome, Dustin!
You're from a good part of the world, I see...:)

It definitely seems like there was a range possible here, and that it made sense to submit more than one style and whatever seemed to make sense to each person. It's absolutely possible that they were looking for a range of stuff, since these shows do tend to have different types of music, depending on the specific show and the specific scene...

Thanks Roland :)

Hopefully some of us will get the forward and then post in the forum about it so we can listen to what exactly they were looking for on this one. Time will tell!

- Me too, after I checked out the Blair Witch, I laughed because there was no music. I deferred to the whole, "goose bumps" thing. In doing so, I feel like I am trying to define the line between "thriller" and plain old scary / paranormal / eerie - mostly in the area of how much drums or percussion to use.

CK: congrats on taking that plunge, it's inspiring. Like that saying goes when the guy is asked how he made it so far, and he replies, "I didn't save anything for the way back" (something to that effect).

Perhaps it's because the "Blair" movie is so creepy so you think it had music. I've read something about someone (don't remember now who it was) who also thought the Hitchcock's "Birds" had really good music of Herrmann, when it really didn't had an ordinary score. (I don't remember that either, how it really sounded.)
Anyway, I submitted one myself, something perhaps a bit in the classic "ghostly" style, don't know if you could call it music, when is it music and when is it sound effects and mood enhancement? Would be fun to know what those who got forwarded had done.
And as others have said, congratulations ckbarlow, for your desicion to take the leap!

Well, I struck out with this one. None of my tracks were forwarded. Guess I didn't decipher the cryptic description well enough.

Anyone get a forward on this one yet?

Crebbs, I'm sorry to hear this. It really was a hard one to figure out, and like I was saying earlier, I am not a fan of having to guess -- but then that is part of this business in some circumstances. I actually got both forwarded -- they're called Boogeyman and We Shouldn't Have Co... and they're on my TAXI page, which is linked from my signature.

Sorry, again, but just remember -- lots of us went a year, two, four years and even more before getting a single forward. Heck, my first forward was my first-ever country song! You just never know, so the best policy is always do your best, try to make every submission better than the last, submit and forget about that piece; move to the next one. Onward, man!

coming to the Rally?

I heard a great story on a radio show about a Greek military leader who deliberately positioned his troops with their backs to a cliff. He figured that (1) they'd psyche out the enemy, who'd think they were crazy men, and (2) retreat wasn't an option, so they wouldn't. I got to a point where I realized I had to adopt that mindset.

Now, back to real life, hell yeah, I socked away about 3 years' salary in savings and investments because I have a spouse, a mortgage, a Presbyterian-guilt upbringing. LOL... And I'm teaching a class per semester in the UNM Music Dept and doing some freelance writing/editing to meet my half of our $$ obligations. But yes, it has felt like stepping off a cliff, for sure. But I tell you what: the view is awesome! :D

CK - Congrats! :) I'm in the same mindset too about saving and trying to do whatever I can to become a composer that can make a living off writing music. As for this listing, I'm not too upset about not getting the forwards. I guess I'm more upset at guessing wrong about the listing than anything else.

I checked out your tracks and I was thinking about doing something more 'sound design-y' too for one of them but thought against it. Should have trusted my first idea ;)

I feel fortunate that I've only been a member of Taxi for a short time and have a forward for another listing already. I'll just take this one and learn from it I guess.

Congrats again :)
