You know you've got it bad when...

Post by linziellen » Sun Mar 09, 2008 10:22 am

This evening I was sitting seriously (as I possibly could) in the village hall listening to the election results, two hours of it to be exact. So many numbers "3 8 7 6 2 1" first I had to keep reminding myself that we weren't counting sheep and stamping on my own feet! Next I'm fumbling in my handbag for pen and paper because the numbers gave me a groovy chorus idea...so in the end I sat writing lyrics. I said to myself "girl you've got it bad" Any others out there!?Lindsey

I take my music notebook to my daughter's dance class with the intent of spending an hour and a half in the parking lot working on lyrics. But that's really the only hour and a half in my entire week where there's no noise, no distractions, no stress ... and so I usually end up falling asleep instead. Hi LindseyI get hit with ideas at the weirdest times. The other night I woke up with this phrase/melody in my head and couldn't get back to sleep for awhile. It was so perfect in it's simplicity. Of course, I told myself that I would remember it but, as is always the case, I fell asleep and couldn't for the life of me recall a bit of it when I woke back up. I also remember the same thing happening to me when listening to my dryer. The rhythm of the machine spawned a really cool chorus and, like a fool, I didn't rush to write it down. Again, it was lost after. No matter what I loaded in the machine, the rhythm just never sounded the same again!I met a song writer here in Quebec who once told me he almost broke his neck diving off a ladder to get to a notebook when a lyric came into his head while painting his apartment.mewman

Lol Kathleen, that's a talent in itself - being able to fall asleep anywhere other than in bed! I can't do that, wish I could. Yeah Mewman, I do that a lot. I don't know where the ideas come from but they tend to appear at night. I might have already mentioned Freddie Mercury who apparently used to write ideas down without having to switch the light on - I tried it and now have a lampshade, quilt and bedside table to replace...At one point I was sleeping next to MP4, notebook and pens but I decided enough was enough, I'm actually trying to ignore most of my night ideas now! Lol @ diving off a ladder, I hope he made good money from that one! At least enough to pay the hospital fees!I was wondering about this music malarkey, the more I think about it the more I'm sure this is what I was born to do. I've never fitted into any kind of category, never felt suited to previous jobs but always loved writing lyrics, listening to and creating music, dancing and singing. Plus I work best in an evening which I've fooled myself to believe is because I'm preparing myself for concerts and late nights It's something that overpowers me, almost like a drug...Oh Lord I'm on my soap box!"I got it bad" Thanks for your replies, anymore funny stories?

This morining I was editing a flat file at work (sorry, computer talk) and kept typing the same pattern on the keyboard. It sounded interesting, so I took out my handy recorder and got it down. Now I have a new rhythmic pattern to play with.

Oh, by the way, Lindsey,'867-5309' has already been done, but I think you're safe with '387-621?' Since you already have the '7' in the third position, I'd go with a '9' in the last spot.
