Wow! Now THIS is the stuff that give the forums a bit of fire! Amazing to look back at how thinbgs were done in the old days. You wanna see an interesting movie? Get a copy of "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music". Tom would mix "on the fly" and THAT would BE the mix, period! I had the honor of exchanging a few emails with Wrecking Crew bass player Carol Kaye who send me a load of text scripts in email that were all valauble interviews where she talked about everything the Wrecking Crew did, in detail, in terms of studio technique and the artists they made music for. Up to that point, I thought that so-and-so bands played on their own albums. It is uncanny just how many songs you can hear where, you think it IS the band it is supposed to be, but actually it is a Wrecking Crew recording. Talk about getting a text-based "Holy Grail to Recording History!"

You know I couldn't possibly fill every request such as this I get, but for you squids, we'll make an exception... I'll keep you posted via PM's as to when I finally get my brother to let go... You play these games through life, I tell ya...As for Lee Sklar - there's a handful of guys that I really look up to on bass and Lee's definitely one. And a very nice man at that!

Well, as the Wrecking Crew is to the 60's and 70's, what my father's documentary is to the 40's and 50's. Imagine how far technology moves in a decade. This pic is from 1947! What they did with sound boards and mic placement were genius. No overdubs - a second take was a second version. I have a CD, a retrospective of Louis Armstrong, and it has two versions of the title track, "A Song Is Born", performed by "The Leader's Band". The exact one they used in the movie and an alternate take which I like even more. Obviously, this picture accompanies that quite nicely since the film itself provides visual for the original take. Editing on the fly!
