Re: Best compliment ever
Quote:As far as the music of ONOFFON, we had a review a while back written by Jason Spatola on our CD release, Your Mind. He opened with this line -"ONOFFON, the progressive jazz-rock trio from California, has once again achieved perfection with their second release, Your Mind."...and he closed with this -"Your Mind is one of the greatest albums of all time by any artist. I sincerely recommend it to anyone.";DWow!!! That's outstanding praise. I'm sure you deserve it and I'm sure you could bore us all with all the praise you've had. But feel free to post some more.

Quote:BTW, after the "masterpiece" comment, don't tell me you passed up the opportunity to hit him up for some cash for "continued artist development". Are you joking, Dave? If not, please tell me about this source of income, never heard of it.I didn't ask him for anything but advice, but he did open the door for another opportunity to pitch a song to an artist.Once a child is over the age of 10, their praise is hard for a parent to earn. My kid is brutal on my songs!!!! But he likes some of them and that always feels great.

Quote:But seriously, once I was playing a gig at the Coconut Teazer and after I finished my guitar solo in one song I looked out in the audience and saw quite a few people with watery eyes. Maybe it was just vodka and smoke but I think I touched something.I know what you mean, if you can connect to the audience it's pretty amazing that your song is moving them the way it moved you to write it. That's great.Vodka and smoke... I agree it has title potential.

Quote:Waytago, nomi!! I bet you keep that close to your heart always. Got a link to the song Thanks for asking. I'd love to hear what you think. And many thanks to everyone for your kinds words!!!! You're making a good feeling better. Before you listen to the song, I have to clarify that I asked him to evaluate Perfect Enough as an artist pitch. He didn't say this was a masterpiece of a recording. He specified a number of things he thought could improve the arrangement/production. He didn't comment on vocal delivery at all. His compliment referred to the song itself, lyrics and melody. He was especially impressed with the message of the song and the way it was crafted. You can listen at my website www.nomiyah.com click on "Listen to Nomi's Music". Or you can go to taxi.com/nomi and find "Perfect Enough". Old-timers will remember that I posted the lyrics a few months ago and got some feedback while writing it. Thanks for all you who contributed your ideas.PERFECT ENOUGH(Words and music by Nomi Yah)Verse 1Your child gets tallWhile you are busyThink of it isn’tIt really a shameIf you miss it allChildhood is briefPicture books and loose teethAnd that Little League gameMan, relaxChorusLife is perfect enoughPerfect enoughLord, it could be betterSometimes it’s roughBut today is perfect enoughVerse 2Your Jaguar’s fastBut you’re running lateYou won’t catch the planeBut you’ll get on the nextAnd you’ll fly first-classTrying to achieveThe American DreamWhile you’re piling up debtsMan, relaxChorusLife is perfect enoughPerfect enoughLord, it could be betterSometimes it's roughBut today is perfect enoughBridgeYou should be proud of what you’ve doneLook how far you’ve comeVerse 3It’s all a matter of priorityKeep up what you’re doingIf it doesn’t ruinThe time that you spendWith your familyYou are their rockAnd they love when you walkThrough that door at the endOf the dayChorusLife is perfect enoughPerfect enoughLord, it could be betterSometimes it's roughBut today is perfect enough

Ooh!! I love that song. I especially love how you surprised me when you off-beated the timing of the chorus, holding out Lord, dragging the first line. Surprised me. And it's got a great melody.Well DONE! No wonder you got such a wonderful compliment. Great song, Nomi. I'm listening to King for a Day right now. Lovely stuff you've got going.

Re: Best compliment ever
Hey Shaka - I think you're reading a little too much into this. Sometimes a compliment is just that - a compliment. It all depends on the context and situation, I suppose. Is this person going to gain in some way by saying your music's good? A compliment only needs to be backed up by a contract if that's what you were going in for in the first place...Otherwise, it's merely one person's opinion. And we all know what they say about opinions...

Quote:A compliment is only that......and it can be taken in whatever fashion the receiver wants to take it, their choice. There is only one way to take a compliment IMO. At face value. Let's lose the implications, suggestions, innuendos, false modesties and layers. Life's too complicated already. At least mine is.
