Dear CAtherine,
Wait a minute. Are you saying that you're dead in the water on a 2008 intel mac, simply because you don't want to update the OS?
Jeez, here I am thinking you're Lady Copperfield standing in the streets, with a grimy face and fingerless gloves saying "Pleez sir, could you spare a crust of bread, or maybe a computer that's not powered by...owls..."
Holy crap, grrrl, that machine is fatter than mine! :o

Unless you own a lot of expensive software that is wholly incompatible with OSX 10.x.x, (which you don't, as far as I can tell) then you really should update, anyway. "Migration Assistant" is built in to the OS. I'd recommend backing up important files before you do it, but this is dirt simple to do. Migration assistant pretty much does it all for you.
Garageband will not be affected (actually, moving to 10.x or higher will make your garageband experience even better they probably have more instruments and some new better ones that you can't run yet. I think all of your work will carry over unaffected.)
Yes you may have to update GB, browsers, itunes, etc. after the OS install, but it's like "click the button, accept the terms, reboot."
You'll be able to run at 64bit which will make your music stuff better. Truth is, everything you do will be better.

srsly, a $30 copy of Snow Leopard fixes everything here. At least as I understand your dilemma. Leopard (10.x) was fairly big change in the OS, and it has become the target for minimum OS requirements for many things. I'd also recommend maxing out the RAM in your machine. I think your's can hold 4GB.

Unless you're looking for an excuse to buy a new computer, just find a copy of Snow Leopard and then update your browser accordingly. Add RAM if necessary. Sorry if it sounds like I'm doling out the Tough Love here (rest assured I'm doing it with a smile on my face and love in my heart) :D But, This is not a problem, folks. Am I missing something?

Hi Catherine.

I've got an iMac 2007 which is even earlier than yours.

It was 2 gig RAM I upped it to 4.

Never done anything like that before but watched tons of youtube vids about it and when I had dome it I couldn't believe I was worried about it. :D

I think I had to get Snow Leopard and then upgraded to Mountain Lion.

And Voila (forgive the French) :D :D :D :D

It works fab, which of course includes Souncloud.

All for a small amount of $ or £.s.

Hopefully people here could give you a more detailed explanation.

Michael.

Hello Catherine,
As you described in an earlier post, is this the computer in question?
Apple Power Macintosh G4 733 (Quicksilver) Specs

If so, I looked it up and it was discontinued (unfortunately) by Apple in 2002.

From what I found there is a way to trick it into running a higher OS but, I don't think it gets to the spec required by Soundcloud.

My opinion is that although SC is very popular it is not the Only good site to showcase your Music, in fact I think there are better sites (but that is just my opinion). For example Reverb Nation, Sound Click and Band Camp are three that are also used by Peeps on this forum.

The sad fact is that eventually (sooner rather that later) You will find (as will we all) that an Upgrade is inevitable.

Unfortunately, as computer technology advances to a certain point there is no other way but to make something (obsolete).

I do sympathize with your dilemma, in the last 20 years or so I have had to buy at least 12 computers just to keep up with the changes.

On the bright side the compatibility and upgrade potential has become a bit more tolerable.

I do wish you the best in this situation and hope you find a good solution.

Ooooh, dearest Bill !! :)

But do you know what, I knew NOTHING about that.

I am so grateful to you for taking the time to write all this Guidance, and a Guidance that really makes sense. :o :)

Expect for "srsly", ... do not understand. Something to do with "alternatively" ? :? Oh I see, it means : "seriously" Got it. ;)

I do not know how to add RAM. I do not even know what RAM is.

Anyway, I am going to reflect on your Guidance, and next, I ... will do ! I will apply. Thank you so very much.

Loved the comparison with the Lady of Copperfield ! ;) :)

Hello sweet Michael,

Thank you so much !

Now I have this  appearing in my head. Sure, how fool I was to think that an Apple Mac Computer could get stuck so easily.
The Apple Mac Computers Inventors were Benefactors of Humanity. And they were Geniuses. They thought about everything. :)

Ok; now it is my turn to think about everything.

As to update RAM, and move to Mountain Lion, this still sounds as double Chinese for me. But I will work it out. I am going to call the Apple Shop in the very near future.

Scares me this Back Up thing.
I have a PassPort working day and night, WD SmartWare, (see the little black flat thing, on the right, on the Photos ?) but ... I have heard it is tricky to organize the Files back to the Computer. The Files are organized by Dates, not by Names or Tittles ...
I will have to use my Human Memory ...

Hello dear EJB,

Thank you so much for coming to my help.

No, the Apple Power Macintosh G4 733 (Quicksilver) Specs, is not my Computer. See the Photos that I have published here a little earlier.
It was brought about in the thread by someone else. By mistake.
I have a 2008, Apple Mac OSX 9.5

So glad that I have published these Photos. It changed everything. Especially that it was so lovely and sunny here this morning.

For example Reverb Nation, Sound Click and Band Camp are three that are also used by Peeps on this forum.
I was so much thinking about this. Yes, you are right. I would love to upload more of my Music elsewhere.
But the problem would have remained : how to listen to the TAXI Members Songs, as more than 50% of them work through and with SoundCloud.

I think that we are getting close to the Solution, now. I feel so much better. :)

Thank you for your intelligent approach, reading your thoughts, yes, you are right.

It is going to be all right yeah !!

Hi Hector and Catherine,

There are a few other options that might work for you if upgrading RAM and operating system don't work out:

1. Chromebook - Really an internet-only machine, so you can't use it for making music, but definitely for uploading and listening on SoundCloud. The cheaper ones don't have great speakers, but they do have headphone jacks so you can hook up to a better speaker system. These are ~$250 in the US and ~£229.00 in the UK.

2. Linux Mint OS - This is a little "techy", but if you can find a cheap/free used PC then you can install a FREE Linux operating system that can run the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. There are many "flavors" of Linux, but I have found over the years that Linux Mint is relatively easy for PC and Mac users to transition to, as the interface isn't drastically different from those operating systems. If you know anyone who can help get a machine like this set up then it will likely be much less expensive than any Windows option. I built my first Linux box from scratch maybe 5 years ago and the total cost with brand new hardware was ~$250.

I use both of these regularly for SoundCloud, though I am *sadly* still stuck to Windows for my audio recording because of my M-AUDIO Firewire 1814 audio interface :(

-Bill

Dear Bill,

Nice to meet you ! :) ;)

And I am very grateful for your Guidance and Clues. And I shall definitively keep in mind your ideas, and investigate.

Thank you so much !

Anyone could be so very kind, and check my SoundCloud, (the Link is down below), and tell me if it just there at all, and still workable as far as listening to my Tracks ?

I shall be very pleased if my Tracks are still public and easy to listen to.

And the Photos/Pictures ? Did they keep them ? And the Comments ? And the number of Views ? And my Followers ? And my Followings ? And my Links ?

Many thanks indeed ! ;) :)

CAtherine - I don't really know Soundcloud, per se, but it looks like everything is working, as far as I can tell. I see pics next to the songs, i see "likes" and all the buttons seem to be present.
THings play correctly. The only thing different I can see is that the tune "Rock" isn't there. don't know if you pulled it, or if it somehow got lost. Other than that, everything looks/acts the same as it did first time I visited about 3 weeks ago.
