Re: Buying a new system
I did speak to the folks at VisionDAW, and they indeed were very helpful.I would like to get a master/slave setup (streaming samples on one system, sequescing on the other), but it's a bit out of my budget at the time. I am still shopping and comparing.Looks like I will be moving to Sonar (from Cubase), and their site had a few DAW suggestions (HP was one of them...the xw8600 Workstation). This will be quite a piece of change (thank God for tax refunds...) to part with, so I want to do it right the first time.Nice to hear that they have good support. A little bit longer drive for me (uh, several days).I tend to research these things to death. So it will be a while before I decide.Hey Ernstinen, what type of setup do you have? Thanks for the info!Bresky

A little bit longer drive for me (uh, several days).Geez, it took my family a whole day to drive from St. Joseph/Benton Harbor to Iron Mountain (where my dad grew up). So I can imagine it would take you awhile to drive to So. CA! Quote:Hey Ernstinen, what type of setup do you have?I've been using MOTU's Performer as my sequencer for years, and just had my Mac G4 upgraded, added a 24" monitor, and installed Digital Performer. That's the "brains" of my system. I have 3 PCs: the VisionDAW especially tweaked for EWQLSO Gold; a second PC for GigaStudio; and a third PC for ProTools, which I basically just master in. Oh, and an Emu e6400 sampler and a few other modules.I'm an old analog guy, so I actually run a series of analog cables out of the PC soundcards into a Soundcraft board. I mix everything in Performer, with a little EQ and reverb added in the Soundcraft if necessary. Then I send a stereo out into an Empirical Labs Fatso for analog warmth and a little compression. I run an analog out into ProTools @ 24/96. Then I master it, adding a little EQ and compression if necessary. The final step I use is a digital out into an Alesis Masterlink, where I might do final tweaking, and then step it down to 44.1/16 to make a CD.That's it!Say, Bresky, are you in the U.P. or in the N. part of the mitten? Re: Buying a new system
Ern, I'm a Digital Performer guy too! I run ADAT from my PCs to my mac, it's a similar workflow except I mix "in the box". I'd love to have a board but it's not in the cards right now (I live in a smallish house in SF and am cramped as it is!). I'll be running 2 PCs and one mac when the VisionDAW arrives. They're setting it up for EWQLSO Plat. It should be a workhorse! I work at 44.1 24bit and dither down with Bias Peak when the time comes to go to CD. Have fun!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Buying a new system
Yah Ern, I'm up in the UP by da big lake, eh? Tree hours nort a Irn Mountain. (little local dialect there)We've had a terrible winter. it hasn't been above 20 degrees since November. About 280 inches of snow. Really getting tired of this winter. No break in sight.... Well, I stay warm in da studio. I'm slowly working to build a killer system (while I build my libraries). Not easy, as the bucks (er, dollars, not deer) don't flow much up here. But it is peaceful and I just love living up here.Thank God for the internet! And, thanks for the info.Mazz, let me know when you get your sys.Bresky

Boards are great if you're recording live ensembles, but I prefer the streamlined look. This is now my set-up (and a commercial product):http://www.virtualinstrumentsmag.com/co ... index.html

Re: Buying a new system
Nick,I sometimes think about how my mixes would sound if they went through an analog board first.I've seen your desk before and it looks perfect. I spent the bucks on a computer this time but your desk is on the wish list!Cheers,Mazz

Re: Buying a new system
Thanks for all of the info everyone! Nick...gorgeous desk....and I am subscribing to the mag today. The desk is on my wish list.I am still quite confused with EWQL Complete Compser's edition. Here's the response from them regarding weather or not it will work on XP64:"Most of the titles in the composers collection will be upgraded to play but not all. The orchestra is first up and is in beta testing right now, then choirs and RA. Colossus has an upgrade to Goliath right now which contains all of the colossus samples plus 8 gigs extra. The Piano and Stormdrum have no plan for play because we just released SD2 and QL Pianos which are brand new libraries already on the play engine. [bThe Kompakt player that comes with these libraries is not 64 bit][/b]."If I buy a 64bit machine, what does this mean to me?I have checked with Cakewalk and Reason, and they both run on XP64.ThanksBresky
