CHIPTUNE feedback requested

Post by SladeKennedy » Thu Aug 04, 2016 8:15 pm

Folks,

I've never tried chiptune or even like chiptune/video game music. But that's why I find it challenging. Looking for some feedback to see if my efforts are even worth submitting. This is my draft and would like any feedback that I could receive. Thanks!!

ORIGINAL, 8-Bit Style “CHIPTUNE” INSTRUMENTALS are needed by an A-List Music Supervisor for several $2,000, NON-Exclusive placements in a series of Virtual Reality Video Games by a AAA Game Developer. Please submit fun, quirky, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that could be found on a playlist with these references:

"Jetpack Blues" by Anamanaguchi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e73hUipjp3Q

"Impetus" by Gaijin Games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAp0ZF7SKDo

"Nintentodisco" by Popskyy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYs6taKeYec

Give them great, synthesized Instrumentals that sound like the video games of long ago, with a melodically and rhythmically compelling 8-Bit sound. Modernized or hybrid Chiptune pieces with contemporary sounding elements and genres is okay for this pitch! Your submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Good edit points and non-faded, buttoned endings are needed for this pitch. Do NOT copy or rip off the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for feel, texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast Quality (in the context of 8-Bit recordings) is needed.

There will be a Non-Exclusive license fee payment of $2,000, All-Inclusive per Instrumental, for 5 Years. The deal is NON-Exclusive, but you will not be permitted to license the same song for other video games during the contract period. You can still pitch it for other opportunities like film and TV. You must own or control the Master and Copyright. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Video Game Company! No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 Instrumentals online or per CD, no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Thursday, August 11th, 2016. TAXI #U160811CT

Hi - I listened to the a la's and to your track. I really don't feel qualified to comment on Chiptune, but I did enjoy hearing your piece. I did wonder if your drums should be more 'electro' sounding, but... I don't know enough to know!

cheers

Good start!

Too much reverb for chiptune. Also, bring in that snare sound right off the bat.
Don't wait.

I think there needs to be a greater distinction between the A and B sections.

Keep a-goin'!

Nice music... I'd drop the melody patch down in volume quite a bit and/or bring up the drums, especially the snare. At 1:13 when the feel changes the track gets a little quiet and sounds a little empty. Perhaps some more "8-bit" grit to it? Have you A/B compared it to the a la's?

Good work, I think it's close!

Cool track!!

Definitely get rid of all the delays and reverbs! Keep it dry for this stuff!!! Other than that, it's ready to go IMHO

And possibly bring up the kicks and snare hits to sound more "crushed"

Blessings!

Wow, seriously thanks for all the feedback. I really do appreciate it and took everyone's feedback into the mix. I'm trying to get better at this craft and need the help. Hope to repay the favor soon.

I'll chip in here ;) and just say - I didn't hear the first drafts, but this certainly fits with the a la's.

I think you've hit it right on the A+B buttons!

Great work!

Cool track!

Do you mind if I ask if it got forwarded? If you don't want to share that's cool.

I just received my "not forwarded" email for this listing. I was looking to see what others submitted and what might have gotten forwarded.

Can't say I'm any authority or expert either, it was an interesting challenge.

That said, the main melodic sounds you used for the authentic chiptune 8 bit style were great! I wanted the evolution from simple to more complex musical ideas to mutate more gradually, especially because I was picturing myself getting immersed in a VR game. If you got a forward I guess my opinion doesn't matter though! :D

If you're curious, my submission is https://soundcloud.com/memesounds/bucke ... de/s-gJv1U -- but I don't want to hijack your thread. (Edit: started my own thread.)
Cheers,

All of mine were returned for being, "too sparse."

They are on my TAXI page, identified by "8-bit."

All of these tracks have been forwarded on a prior listing.

Cheers!
