Re: Cubase 6 - drool
Do they have a patch available yet for that drool problem?

Hi, To All you Droolers; (Over Cubase 6)
I Use Cubase5 and have tried to use the articulation tool. I am unable to get it to do anything, thus...
What's the BIG Deal?
I'd like to get my drool on but don't know what I'm supposed to do with this thing, anyone have any links that show just what this thing does.
Thanks From Drool-Less,
BB

It's designed to be used with multi-sample libraries. Most of these libraries have a Master patch version of their instruments, which loads all the articulations at once. Then you normally can use keyswitches to change articulations on the fly. When you're recording in a DAW, you can also insert these keyswitch notes to change the articulations on the fly as a sequence plays. Which is cool, but its a pain in the ass.greatmoves wrote:Hi, To All you Droolers; (Over Cubase 6)

Expression is a tool that allows you to define all the keyswitches on a per patch basis and save them as an expression map. You can load these expression maps onto a midi track. This gets you two new views, one in your midi piano note editor and another in your score editor. In the midi piano roll editor, articulations show up as an option in your controller lanes beneath all the note data. From there you can use the drawing tool to draw the articulation changes on each note.
In the score editor, you can write expression markings over your notes (like you do in a real score). Those expression marking are also controlled by your expression map, so the word Pizz triggers the Pizzicato samples, stac or a dot over the note, triggers the staccato samples. Huge time saver.
I'm almost positive that Cubase has some built in expressions that are setup for one of the built in instruments. I'm not at my music computer, so I can't check which one's, but I believe its Halion (their sample player). So you can play around with them without having to go through the setup to see what its all about.
I did a real quick video a long time ago to show it to a friend of mine. It will at least give you an idea of how this works. I should probably do a real tutorial on how the setup is done one day. Probably won't.

So that's what Cubase 5 does. It makes changing articulations really easy. Cubase 6 takes this to the next level, cuase usually the next step, after you've got your articulations correct, is that you start to manipulate the performance of the midi track through lot's of controller changes. This is a bigger pain in the ass, IMO the biggest pain of the entire writing/recording process. Those controller's all have to be drawn in a on separate lanes and it's hard to line them up with notes at times, so your always zooming in and out, and on and on and on.
Cubase 6 get's rid of the idea of multiple controller lanes and has a new view where you can draw multiple controllers in on lane and those are ATTACHED to the individual note themselves. So if you have a chord, you can actually draw in multiple (and completely different) controller changes on each note in the chord. Which is actually impossible in MIDI and its pretty cool that they've figured out how to pull this off. And if you cut or move the notes around or to different tracks, everything comes along for the ride because they are all literally tied to individual notes.
Hence my drool.

seems glitch free so far; 32-bit vs 64-bit
I upgraded from V5 to V6 about a month ago and it has worked without any glitch. I sent 2 submissions entirely done on V6 last week.
Re 32-bit vs. 64-bit: I am on Windows 7 64-bit. I installed the 64-bit of Cubase 6 first and had serious performance issues with 32-bit VSTs. There seems to be at least one product out there which might solve the problem but it appeared too complex to me (my personal opinion only). Instead, I installed the 32-bit version of Cubase 6. Running on a 64-bit operating system that gives me 4 GB RAM space, and I do not need any more than that.
Cubase also seems to do a very good job at multitasking, distributing work very well across all processor threads (8 in my case).

You would think that the other DAW users would have figured it out by now that Cubase is way ahead.
The group edit functions are way cool too. Unlike Logic Pro you dont need to press 50 buttons to achieve the same results. Cubase is quick and easy.

Here is a review of some of the more salient new features in Cubase V6. Among other capabilities I am the time stretching (see the Elastique fantastique section) all the time - it is incredibly easy to use and the quality is outstanding. I work entirely in the box but if I were using full recorded tracks I think this would be excellent for e.g. locking drums and bass when needed.

Please tell us how you like it! I got too busy to even consider dealing with an upgrade right now. I'm hoping to have some time next month to install and give it a shot.
