Here's a free royalty-free pack from Wave Alchemy (very liberal license included).

Like Andy said, the warm and clean kicks in this pack would be great to use for the bottom end part if you decide to try layering.

But they're still very useable on their own. Tune them down for more "oomph". slow down the attack a bit if you don't want it to be so "pointy", which would also allow the transient of another kick to give it some character if you're layering.

Good luck with your tune!

Owen.

Yes, I just got it too... I used it a TON on my most recent cue. It is now my go-to synth.

same idea from NI

don't own it, but looks interesting for the hybrid sound.

Thanks Andy. I've seen this. Kind of like slater and toontrack. good stuff. but I think what I really want is audio kick sample. audio kicks sound like they have more weight than midi? or is it just me hearing this?

Uh...... I think you might be tricking yourself into believing something.

Where do you think the sounds come from that are triggered by a midi drum instrument. Audio samples of course.

If it's an 808 or a 909 those come from drums machines anyways and are computer generated, I don't think they used mangled audio samples.

I do agree though that there is a difference between audio kick samples that are highly produced (already eq'd, compressed, tape saturated, distorted, ADSR envelope massaged) and raw kick samples from a drum vi, but you can apply those same processes to the raw sample anyways.

My 2 cents

That makes sense. I guess the processed ones make a difference. so maybe the NI DrumLab is a good one to get. midi is so much easier to work with. Just that I keep seeing producers like Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Avicii and others opt for audio for drums and midi for synths.

Thanks. 8-)

Hey Gavin, I think you may be off in your idea of what MIDI is...

MIDI is just a computer code for music that will play real audio files when programmed into your DAW using a keyboard or the pencil tool. The MIDI data simply tells your computer to play "X File.wav" (or anything associated with the patch - aka "synth", "sample", or "virtual instrument") that corresponds with where the programmer assigned it on the midi keyboard, whenever you press that key.

Sure, there are cheap and cheesy sound effects that can be played through midi. But there are also amazing audio files that can be played through midi too. Just depends on the virtual instrument you're using.

So, MIDI isn't a sound. It's just a trigger which will play the real audio you're looking for.

Thanks Matt. Great I like using midi. Will look at that NI DrumLab some more.

Much appreciated. 8-)

Sorry if I'm bursting any bubbles, but 808 and 909 kicks are built from simple sine waves and white noise bursts in the original instruments. I gotta laugh when I see ads boasting how their sampled versions are 24-bit, like that could be any better.
