Dance Kick - Audio Samples

Post by GavinKMusic » Sat Apr 19, 2014 7:23 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm working on a dance song and realize the kick has to be really solid and punchy. Right now I'm just using an audio loop I got from cubase but it had more than just the kick in it. I would like to keep all the drums separate. I was using midi for drums but I think the audio samples sound a little warmer and fatter or is it just me? however after researching some of the top dance producers most seem to favour audio kick samples for drums over midi and use midi just for synth stuff. however I've seen some incredible remix producers and DJ's using midi kicks.

So where would be a great place to get some great sounding kicks for dance productions. Probably really only need like one good kick.

Thanks for any direction. Much appreciated. 8-)

Hey Gavin, try a company like Big Fish Audio as a starting place. I've gotten some good kick samples when buying their EDM or Dubstep packs. You'll have to get clearance from the company to use them in library or commercial productions, but it's a simple email and I've never known them to deny permission to anybody. If you buy a sample pack, you'll get all sorts of options to choose from.

Or you could check out a website called www.FreeSound.org. It's a user-upload site, so there's plenty of crap intermingled with the good stuff, but it's all royalty-free, so you can just download some good sounds and start using them right away without fear of breaking copyright laws.

most tunes that are heavy on sampled kicks and snares use 3 different samples for each. for kick, one that has bottom, one that has chesty punch and one that has whatever the first two dont.

then the are mixed together and might be compressed or eq'd as a group.

If you cannot find samples in your existing midi choices, then there are sample libraries to buy.

but since its a hybrid kick sound, you an pretty much make it with 3 distinctive samples. each one might suck on its own, but mixed together they do the perfect blend.

HTH Gavin.

Thanks Matt for those links. Much appreciated. 8-)

Andy thanks. Yes I've heard of stacking but thought you can find a single kick out there. But since I just purchased like 500 kicks from cubase I should be able to stack a few to make one solid kick. only problem now is figuring out how to take a single audio kick and making it work within a project as a loop. I can do it with midi easily but audio seem harder thats why right now I've used a drum loop for the track I'm working on but would like to take a single solid audio kick and make a loop out of it. this is the kick I have right now which I kinda like but its a cubase loop with percussion in it also: https://soundcloud.com/the-element-musi ... king-title

actually there's also a midi kick in there as well I got from toontack. I used it for quieter and build parts and to back up the audio kick. midi kick also I think sending to a sidechain.

Thanks again guys. 8-)

Hey Gavin,
Halion SE has a ton of kicks
So you can midi loop for days
Open some channels in Halion and look at "Drums Percussion"
There is one program called "Studio Kicks" (or something like that)
plenty to choose and layer
also about 6 or so Hip Hop Drum Kits in there with plenty to choose from!

you might find what you're looking for in Roland's TR909 kick. They are particularly punchy.

Here's a free royalty-free pack from Wave Alchemy (very liberal license included).

http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2012/03 ... e-alchemy/

Like Andy said, the warm and clean kicks in this pack would be great to use for the bottom end part if you decide to try layering.

But they're still very useable on their own. Tune them down for more "oomph". slow down the attack a bit if you don't want it to be so "pointy", which would also allow the transient of another kick to give it some character if you're layering.

Good luck with your tune!

Owen.

The funny thing is I bought all the expansion packs from Cubase..loops and sample for electronic but then realized I have Halion SE and I think I need full version to get expansion packs running for Halion. I plan on buying the whole bundle of them.

Just bought Sylenth 1 and its awesome. Nexus is next on my list after Halion 2. Also purchase some FX loops from Primeloops.
