Re: East West Orchestra Upgrade
I know this thread is going off topic but wanted to add a few thoughts.I'm running several pieces of software with dongles and have had absolutely no problems---ever.It is interesting to me that we, as songwriters and composers, will do whatever it takes to protect our intellectual property and yet see little wrong with stealing someone else's intellectual property. I'm not sure we can have it both ways. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap" (I know this is not original, but could be a hook) ChuckBTW On a macro basis, I think one of the challenges for America, as a player in the global economy, is to educate the rest of the world of the value of intellectual property. If we are not exporting "hard" products ( cars, TV's, computers etc.etc) we manufacture, we have to protect the soft products.(music, software, books etc. etc)

Please don't misunderstand - I'm not against dongles, per se. Those entrepeneurs who produce new software certainly deserve to reap their just rewards, and those who intend to use this software indeed should expect to pay for that privilege.I, too, use other software that requires dongles. The salient difference is that these other software manufacturers supplied the dongle along with the software - they didn't ask me to pay extra to protect their intellectual property, and therein lies my objection to EWQLSO's policy. When one couples the extra cost of the dongle (attendant with purchase of the "Play" version) with the built-in obsolescence of the EWQLSO Gold bundle that I purchased only 6 months ago, one arrives at a truly unbeatable combination.Gee, even Microsoft Windows is back-compatible. When I purchased XP, I didn't lose my license to use Windows98 (or whatever). Or did I???At any rate, the day will soon arrive when the act of getting out of bed in the morning will require a dongle. All I ask is that the manufacturer will kindly supply the dongle at no extra charge when I purchase his mattress.

actually, a fairer analogy would be, you can break into your own house, if you are locked out. I paid for a use liscence, I use only that liscence, in the exact way I would legitimately, cutting out the dongle is like taking a lock off a bedroom door that locks everytime you shut it. explain to me how its fair to compare me to a bank robber at all? and crs, what exactly did I steal? I modified a legal copy to make it faster, period, I would say that is a far cry from "stealing intellectual property" and the snarky comment is a little insulting. And as I actually track my systems speeds, there is a difference, a pretty damn decent one, over 200ms delay. It is real easy to throw stones guys, but check your facts and think it through first, my position is entirely defendable, you have never modified something you owned to work better? Thats what I thought, now get off the soap boxes and back on the consoles.

None of my comments were directed at anyone posting comments on this thread.I've just grown a little tired of everyone complaining about dongles on every forum that I visit. If people were not stealing the software, there would not be protection measures in place to prevent the stealing. That was the point I was attempting to make. I was not trying to indict anyone or their behavior. On another note, I went to Guitar Center today and they too are having to do some ridiculous things to protect themselves as well, to the point that you feel like a criminal. I tried to buy some guitar picks, which are now all pre-packaged and behind the counter, nearly beyond the distance where you can tell one pick from another. I asked if I could go behind the counter to look at the picks more closely and was told it was against store policy. These types of policies ,unfortunately are only put in place after too many guitar picks are stolen.Chuck

yeah, but its completely ineffective, all they are doing is mucking it up for paying customers, and making me spend extra money for stuff I am utterly not responsible for, the dongles dont work, this is a fact, they also slow down the performance, why keep using them, anyone who would be deterred by a dongle would be detered by a software lock, even like a remote challange code, i just think its entirely unfair to have to carry two usb hubs full of dongles if you wanna record offsite, and if something happens to that bag, well, you are out THOUSANDS of dollars, but yet there is no alternative. I would much rather keep mine in a box in my room where some jack ass cant sit on my bag and put me in the poor house. I learned that lesson to the tune of 4 grand, so consider me a graduate.

You can also insure your ilok for $30 a year. Probably a good investment for those traveling with them.
