Re: Electro/Orchestral - first attempt- any thoughts?
Vincent, this is good! As has been said, I'll second the reverb on the drums - especially the kit. The timpani is placed correctly to my ears, the challenge now is mixing the reverb enough to put the kit in a similar stage position while maintaining impact. Great composition, though.
The strings sound a bit thin and synth-y to me, as well as the brass. During some of the high brass lines, you could have some low brass swells underneath to give it some impact as well as some hellacious drum hits on top of that. Maybe also some gated bassline synth in there running a basic arpeggiated pattern would be very cool too. Great first shot, though! Keep it up!

Hi Wes, thanks for your thoughts! Interesting about the strings and brass, because they are EWQL symphonic sounds, which to my ear are more real like. Nonetheless, duly noted! I will have another listen keeping in mind your thoughts!
Thanks!

Vincent!

Vincent,
This hangs together much better compositionally, at least to my ears. The shorter intro is very effective and getting to the last chord when you do makes much more musical sense, again, IMO only
I'm on my crappy computer speakers at work so I can't comment too much on the mix except to say that I'd love to hear the short articulations have a bit more bite on them (this seems to be a theme in my reviews this morning!
). A lot of electro-orchestral music I hear done with samples tends to sound a bit sluggish and some of it comes from the samples speaking a tiny bit (or a lot) late, particularly in the low brass. I have to move the low brass forward in time (to the left) often quite a bit to get them to "groove" with the rhythmic elements of the piece. You'd be surprised how much this can give a piece more vitality. I think your piece could benefit from a tiny bit more vitality from the orchestral players. Feed them Wheaties!!
Overall this is an excellent first attempt!!

Agreed - that beginning part fits the piece much better now! The strings don't sound so synth-y to me as the brass now. When the brass does the staccatto section at about :38 - it sounds forte, but the volume and presence isn't there. Compared to the strings, the brass isn't as loud as a piano string part. If it's hitting so hard, velocity-wise, IMO it should be in my face!! Those hits would have so much more impact if they were brought more forward and given a bit of volume. This is an excellent piece, but I think the brass still needs a bit of tweaking. And I think the guitars also should come up a bit - probly cause I'm an axe-slinger!
Great tune, Vincent!
Wes

Hi Mazz, thanks for your thoughts! Certainly, feeding them "Wheaties", might do the trick! Food is often the best elixir! Perhaps they would be more enticed with a nice steak.... I digress! Thanks for the listen. Your input is duly noted!
