Dig it Rob! I find it mentally stimulating and much more fun to build my own (it is more work in the beginning but often beautiful mistakes are born the same way)Cruciform wrote:Edmond, I'm entirely self taught when it comes to sound design. I don't think I've ever even watched any tutorial vids about it. It's basically been a case of making or taking a sound and then processing it with different tools to see what happens. After a while you understand what does what and how to achieve desired results, and that's when the 'sound design' starts ie. when you have a sound in your head and you understand what you need to do to get there. A lot of it initially is good fortune, you try something just to see what happens and go from there. There is no right or wrong, just practice. For our current sound design album, one cue I'm doing was built about 80% from a single drum hit. Take it, process it one way. Then process that result in a bunch of different ways. Fun!
Here's a rough quick example extracted from that project. This exercise was with one sound, the original drum hit, then processed as described in comments: https://soundcloud.com/cyphertm/sd-example/s-sPJEv
For some reason, the comments aren't showing there so I'll outline them here:
0:00 drum hit from sample library
0:05 shape with eq
0:09 shape attack and decay to achieve 'whoom' sound, then multiply to create deep pulse
0:10 process that pulse with Tantra to create a further variety of pulses
0:50 pitch shift up one of the pulses
0:55 stutter edit
0:57 massive hit achieved using a combination of compression, reverb and distortion
All of that from the original drum hit. No other sounds were used.

Haha, thanks Matt, but nah, I'm at the point where I realise how little I know about sound design and how much there is to learn.VanderBoegh wrote:
