Re: Getting the click sounds out after I copy and paste
Ah, nomenclature! What I do most often amounts to what was once called a butt-splice. A crossfade is two clips overlapping, forming a little "X" as one clip ramps up while the previous clip ramps down, usually done to hide clicks or pops that result from digitally cutting anywhere but at a zero-crossing. My DAW doesn't automatically crossfade when I lay one clip on top of another, as multiple clip layers can play and coexist in a single track in Tracktion, but it does automatically make all cuts at the nearest zero-crossing-you can turn that off, but it's the default. Sorry for any confusion!

Naw, it's cool, cuz I learn stuff, that way. Merge behavior is the main reason I haven't warmed up to Reaper. I'm sure there's a setting I can change to make it act the way I want, so I'll be investigating further, thanks!

I have the utmost respect for anyone that cuts tape ... I've seen it done a few times on sessions and I'd never have the guts to do something that finalmojobone wrote:I never cross-fade manually, unless I can hear a problem; if you've done it enough times with a razor blade, choosing where to cut your clips becomes second nature, and with enough zoom, I can get it pretty dang seamless. (I can recall, with an utter lack of fondness, many a white-knuckle punch-in from the ol' four and eight-track days) Then again, I'm one of those peeps that are philosophically opposed to editing a single note in an otherwise bitchin' performance; (unless it's MIDI, heh) I'll either play it again or leave it in, in most cases, and save the crossfades for creative edits.

You should check out the Jack White interview in the last issue of Tape-Op. (apparently it's as yet unavailable online or hasn't been archived, yet) He's a big fan of track limits and committing to decisions in the moment; he may have something, there. If you can still hit re-do, it isn't really done.

Re: Getting the click sounds out after I copy and paste
I'll look out for that article. I change my mind too much though to commit anything
... In the old days you actually had to have the song structure worked out before hand. It's much easier now to write on the fly, which definitely works for me. The last tape session I did ( about 20 years ago ) was a lot of rehearsing with the producer in the room, changing things he didn't like ... Not quite the same way nowadays.

It's a different paradigm, for sure. The modern method is, you plays your stuff and the producer transfers it to ProTools and chops it into something unrecognizable, then the mastering engineer overbakes everything. Then the A&R guy comes in and says, "I don't hear a single."
I'm as guilty as anybody of being paralyzed by the stunning array of options afforded by modern recording gear, but at some point (hopefully before the release date) a decision or two must be made; it's good to have options, but it's also good to be done and on to the next thing, so we can all collect our money.

This is actually pretty huge; I hope that it informs everything you record for the rest of your life; it's already influenced me: http://www.tapeop.com/articles/30/bob-olhsson/
Here's a quote from the Motown recording legend: "In fact, this is one thing that is really kind of missing from today's production, nobody commits to anything."
I don't really need to opine about which way is better, you can jes' listen, and decide for yourself. 'Nuff said?

It's funny you say that. A friend of mine was recording their second album and had a big name producer ( I can't remember who it was ... ) on it because of the success of their first. When they first started recording the guitars, the producer was surprised that he could actually play his guitar and was prepared to do a chord at a time and cut something together, as he'd done on the last few albums he'd just finishedmojobone wrote:It's a different paradigm, for sure. It seems anyone can be a star nowadays .... looks/image seem to matter more than musicianship. Ghost players, Auto-tune and some cool clothes is all you need .... Too bad I spent most of my teen years locked away learning how to play
