Honorable Mention in Billboard Songwriting Contest

Post by jchitty » Sat Jul 18, 2009 7:31 am

I am posting this here 'coz I recently posted my You Tube of " Leaving Out of Atmore" here. This morning, I opened my mailbox to find that Bill Gaunce and I had gotten an 'Honorable Mention' for "Atmore." Yeah, we didn't win first place or anything, but thousands of people enter this contest, and I was pretty excited that we placed in the top 500. This is a big contest, so I was pleased. http://www.taximusic.com/hosting/home.php?userid=2572 I have NO idea why Bill's name is not on the honorable mention certificate I received. LOL, I actually put his name FIRST on the song....I'm guessing that since I filled out the entry, (only one person could fill it out) the certificate is in my name, although I can still xerox Bill one if he likes. I can also call the contest and ask if they would make a certificate in his name as well. This made my day....I work so hard, and I never seem to get very far....so to get recognition for one of my (our) songs makes me very happy. Of course, Bill made this song what it is...with his unbelievable production, vocals and creation of the melody....maybe this song does have a chance somewhere. Steve Gilbert also deserves credit for his keyboard work on Atmore...he did an outstanding job. If there was ever a time I needed a little rain on my dry creek bed of songwriting, this is it. It was nice to get that this morning.

Congrats Bill & Chits! You just got this today? Wow! I thought if people didn't hear by now, they didn't get any mention. A few years ago I got one- you had to place in the top 1500. It's proudly pasted on my wall, though I wish I knew 1500 out of how many, LOL... Top 500 is very impressive! I'm sure there were many thousands of submssions. Mega-congrats again!! Casey

Thanks so much Richard and Marc for the nice words. Yeah, Case...I couldn't figure out why I got this certificate so late either. The contest was over in December, and they announced the winners in spring of 2009. I checked their website, several months ago and I said to myself, "oh well, Bill and I didn't win anything." And then I get a certificate this morning, LOL. We also won a pair of sunglasses and some guitar strings too, haha. Here's what our certificate said:Honorable MentionPresented to Janet ChittyIn Recognition of having your original composition "Leaving Out of Atmore" among the top 500 of the 16th annual Billboard World Song Contest. Only the highest quality songs make it to the top. This honor demonstrates the talent and dedication it takes to write a "Hit Song."They also have a top 1,500 too, Case......and they're supposed to get honorable mentions too....so you done good! After 1,500, of course, you get nothing. Yeah, if we placed in the top 500, were there only 501 entries, hehe? Maybe I can take a pic of the certificate and post it....I still can't believe it....I never expected anything and especially this late.

You got me to run and check my mailbox. Nothing today. I made the top 1500 about 4-5 years ago for "Painfully Single". I do have an entry in this latest contest, so maybe I'll got some surprise mail this week (or maybe not). What's funny is when people ask me about song contests I generally say they aren't worth it & this is the last time I'm going to enter one...Not that it's not VERY COOL to get that certificate-- it is!! Top 500 is an excellent achievement. Be proud! Casey
