Re: How many lefties
Bella. Hey, i was a leftie in the 60s but then became a conservative...oops. What I _meant_to say...I thought I was a rightie until I started fencing at age 40, and cos of an old skiing injury had to fence left-handed...discovered I was at least ambidextrous and that the left was stronger! It had never clicked why my handwriting was abominable from a little kid and why I never had problems with the left hand piano...

Re: How many lefties
I'm a lefty too and so old that I can remember my 1st grade teacher trying to make me right handed....by hitting my left hand with a ruler when I'd write with it! I went home crying to my mom, and she told the teacher, 'this child is lefthanded, leave her alone.' So Teach never bothered me after that. I play a right handed guitar....my guitar teacher is also left handed, but he played a right handed guitar and taught me how to as well, and I've had no prob with it. I recently visited the Gibson guitar store in Nashville (at the mall) and I tried to play a left handed guitar, and it felt strange. I've gotten used to strumming with my right hand. At first it was kind of weird learning to strum with my right hand because it's so weak, but I got the hang of it. Although I suck at playing the guitar anyway, no matter what hand I'm strumming with.

Man i can't believe all these stories of abuse for being left-handed! that's horrible! i'm a lefty although i have learned to use my right hand for some things. the trickiest has been the trips to India, now there is a place where right hand = good and left hand = very VERY bad! (i think most people know this but the left hand is used there as well, toilet paper, and the right hand is used to eat food). i was so nervous the first time i met my mother-in-law that i dug into my food with my left hand and as soon as i realized what i had done i was expecting her to like, pass out or something! but she laughed at my distress and i knew we were off to a good start.

PS you know what i have the most difficult time with- knives! it drives me crazy how the serration is only on the one side so when i try to cut something i just make a dent in it.and also, even being left-handed doesn't help me with playing Bach! he's a killer! (and a genius)

Drew:I guess being a lefty makes you stubborn, you have to rebel against everything, since all the things are made for the "other" people!Chits: in Catholic School you were not allowed to use rollerball pens to write, so you can imagine the mess and the ink stained papers since you know we write resting the side of the hand on the paper.Billy: I was told I tie knots and bows the "wrong" way. Who cares? They remain tied.Tadpole: I tried fencing once and was using the right hand...Go figure!Hazineju: I couldnt use a knife with my left hand, always use the right , dunno why. Same for brushing teeth. And of course Bach was a genius, he was a lefty!

Obama and I are both left handed Virgos, so I guess it's not all bad. I'm glad to be in that camp. I think being a Virgo has actually been more of a handicap, hehe. We're just plain whacked.

You're right, Brinda, most lefties do write resting on the side of the hand, and it could get messy....for some reason, I write like a regular right hander, from a left to right movement in a straight line, and not in the down up movement like many left handers do. In other words, I never had to turn my paper to write. I do remember right handed desks though....as I kid, it took me a bit longer to finish my tests because I didn't have user friendly desk a right handers did.I didn't know this, but many of our presidents in the last 30 years have been left handers, Clinton, Bush Jr. and Obama. I've read research which said that Southpaws are not really more artistic than right handers, but one has to wonder....left handers are pretty numerous in the fields of art.

Now they seem to charge the same for lefties as for right-handed, probably because the world has gone ultra-PC an manufacturers can't get away with it any more..Actually, that's because of CNC machining. CNC= computer numerical control. Machine-cut guitar parts cost the same whether right or lefthanded; custom built lefty guitars still cost more when they have hand-shaped necks.
