Re: I export my MP3 in mono..is that wrong?
Going to really have to check this out. By the time one of my songs gets to taxi, and I play it on the forum, it has lost a lot. Especially the bass. It should sound the same as playing it off the jump drive I am using?Anyhow, I have to get to the bottom of this. Thanks again you's guys:)Paul

The Taxi "chipmunk" process probably degrades your song a bit...I think it does for mine. The fine print states that the screeners listen to your mp3 as you uploaded it...the Taxi green "play" button launches a compressed version of your song. So we hear a fuzzier version than the screener does (I hope).I don't know if compression normally messes with the top end (higher frequencies) more than the bottom end...it seems to from what I hear before/after the Taxi chipmunk treatment.

Suz - You're spot on with your data compression information summary. (Is that a dedundant statement???) Oct 29, 2008, 9:19am, devin wrote:I don't know if compression normally messes with the top end (higher frequencies) more than the bottom end...Devin - The artifacts of data compression will primarily be audible in the higher frequencies. Also, to attach some subjective statements to the data rates, 16 kbps is considered speech or voice communication quality.- It is based on a sampling rate of 11,025 Hz, mono, which gives a top end frequency response of 5,512 Hz.32 kbps is also considered speech or voice communication quality.64 kbps approximates FM radio- These compression rates are typically based upon sampling rates of 22,050 Hz, which will give a top end frequency response of 11,025 Hz, mono (for 32 kbps) or 11,025 Hz, stereo (for 64 kbps).96 kbps is "near CD" quality- This is primarily because it is based upon the CD sampling rate of 44,100 Hz, giving a maximum frequency range of 22,050 Hz, stereo.128 kbps is comparable to CD quality (remember when that was the gold standard??)160+ kbps is often termed "CD Transparent" qualityThere's debate about the point at which no further improvement in sound quality is heard. Is 320 kbps audibly better than 160 kpbs? It depends. But the principle remains that you can always downgrade from 320 kbps to 128, if needed. Yet if you start with 128 kbps, that's as good as it gets.Pardon my yammering. Hope it helps.Brad

Turns out that all I needed was an updated DLL file for the LAME encoder used by my old (and familiar) Steinberg WAVE program. And it worked just fine. However, I now have a copy of Audacity too (how cool that it's free) and will get acquanted with it eventually.

Re: I export my MP3 in mono..is that wrong?
This is a very helpful thread -- thanks for starting it all off with your questions, Paul. And grazi for the reminders about sampling rates, Brad. I haven't researched loss-less compression yet. Any compatibility issues when exporting songs in loss-less compressed formats versus lossy? Also, I've been uploading my songs to Taxi at 320 kbps; guess I thought that the 192 kbps was a minimum quality suggestion. Am i wrong? Are the compression police going to get me? !!Thanks, fellow data-crunchers and audiophiles! This is fascinating!Think I'm going to go calculate pi to a thousand places now . . . Suz

I'd get players on the other team saying "what's with the three digit number?!?"For a while, I was home-run champ, so I'd just tell them they would understand later after I made another full circle.Only one person ever got that joke...

Re: I export my MP3 in mono..is that wrong?
FWIW, I get better sound going to mp3 straight from 24 bit file. I use Cool Edit. I can hear a difference between 128 and 192kps, not so much between 192 and 320.jazzstan, I just use a flash drive and work on two computers. That way I keep the music puter offline. It's not too much of a PITA...
