I won John Lennon Songwriting Contest... and ?
Hello:I'm trying to become a (serious and proffessional) songwriter for two years. Spent time and money to make my dream come true... but success not arrive yet.Now I know that I won John Lenon Songwriting Contest, Session I 2008 in Latin Category with my song 'Camina'... but nothing changes... publishers in Spain not call me and say 'ok, so let me review your work'...It seems like something impossible to me. I'm breaking down and stop making music and thinking in a 'normal' job again.Ok, I'm sad. Sorry.Avelino

Sorry.AvelinoWell, the competition that you beat out for the JLSC Latin category happens to be here on the forum. Small world! Both your track and their track were awesome. I confess that I voted for them everyday but I told them you won because you had a better picture (to make them feel better). One thing for sure, don't give up before things have a chance to develop. Honestly, even with a lot of hard work it might be years before the benefits of your JLSC accomplishment become apparent. Or... for some it's easier to say "The John Lennon Songwriting Contest doesn't work".

An accomplishment like that is HUGE! It takes time to develop the relationships with publishers, promoters, and others in this business. You have to have the talent and ability to win that contest, and since you won you have great cred now, so take your time and keep working. Even if you have to have a day job in the meantime, why give up on your music? The biggest thing needed (next to ability, talent etc) is PATIENCE and PERSISTENCE. Enjoy that you won a reputable world wide contest and keep writing! Most people here have day jobs while they work on their music career. I, for example, operate a web site for graphic design and screen printers. What the heck does that do with writing music for tv? Nothing, but it gives me the money to join taxi and learn what I need to eventually get where I want to be. The day job and music don't have to be exclusive to each other and I hope you keep writing!!

Avelino - Ohhhhh!!! Don't be sad - that is a great accomplishment!! Just keep pluggin away. It is like a roller coaster - just hang on to those feelings you had when you won the contest, especially on days like today (well, October 3) when you're not feeling as happy. Don't give up ...Cher

Dear Avelino,I can understand your sadness but you did an amazing thing! That's a very big competition. Musicians from around the world know about it. If you loved music before you won, you surely must still love it now. Music didn't let you down, Avelino. So not playing or writing anymore isn't really taking care of the problem, is it? It's that you're not getting to the right people that seems to be the problem, right? It sometimes takes time to build a rapport with libraries and publishers. Maybe American libraries would be helpful as well? Anyway, keep trying, don't give up. Nobody won a Grammy who gave up. You wouldn't have won this award if you'd given up. Hang in there.

Congratulations on winning, great news! But you have to understand, this business is about momentum, there is no one accomplishment that will bring you success, it has to do with everything combined. My advice would be keep entering more and more contests, submit to everyone you can and do everything you can to increase the resume. Alot of people don't think of it that way but that is exactly what you are doing, building a resume.
