Ideal amount of Songs

Post by dayson1 » Fri Jun 22, 2007 8:05 pm

Hello, I belonged to Taxi some years ago, I joined prematurely.I only had a few songs at the time and was still a bit green.I am thinking of rejoining Taxi again at some point. I was wondering if anyone here had an idea of what would be a good amount of songs to have under your belt, before rejoining?Any idea what would be a good number to start with?I appreciate any input on this, Thanks in advance-Dana

If you have 10 songs, that all rate 8/10 when people listen to them, I would caution spending the money until you know what you actually have to spend to have your recordings become 10's, in objective listener's ears. If you have one absolutely killer tune, it could be worth your while. If you have 25 killer songs, and you're still writing up a storm, Taxi is likely worth your while. Don't assume that Taxi is a great choice for you, because you just know your songs are beautiful works of art and you know they'll make you and other people money. That's what I did. I thought Taxi would jump up and down about my music. Yep, I was wrong. But if you wanna find out from Taxi members here what they think of your songs, be prepared to devote as much time to their craft, as you expect them to spend on yours.

In answer your question, I don't think it's quantity that counts. It's quality. Do you have...a) good demos of commercially viable, undeniable hit songs in specific genres that match the requirements of listings you've been watching (sign up to get the listings - they're free & they give you an idea of what's being looked for)... and/or, b) do you have broadcast quality recordings of music that is suitable for film & tv.You can wait until you think you have the goods, which is one choice & could be a wise one. Or you can use the critiques & feedback to improve your work. That's what I've been doing.cheersHummin'bird

Hi, Steve and Hummingbird:)))I appreciate you both taking the time to give me your thoughts on this. You both have really great advice and lots to consider.I was thinking maybe 10 really great or (killer) songs would be ideal.Vicki, yes I agree:) It is the quality of quantity by far!You have both given me a lot to think about, and I appreciate you both taking the time- I welcome more input if anyone else has something they would like to add to this:))-Dana

Check out the Taxi listings regularly. Do you have material that fits some of those listings?Do you produce, or have you produced enough material to submit a fair amount of songs to the listings for 12 month period. Enough to justifiy your membership fee?

Do you have material that fits some of those listings?i agree. If you write different styles of music, or you have a knack for great hooks, then you should be fine. But if you are more comfortable in a specific genre, then make sure you see enough listings for it to be worth it.My road through taxi has been more as a career artist then songwriter/producer. (this is not recommended )so I stick more to the Americana Singer/Songwriter listings. which had limited the number of submissions I make.although my showing up on the forum is related to me thinking of writing some stuff specifically for some listings. What is your main genre? Who do you most sound like? (skip that one, i don't know anyone who is comfortable answering that question!)

Think of it as a "custom fit" rather than trying to fit existing music into a listing.I didn't have any material when I joined Taxi but I did have the ability (through a small home studio) to write new stuff for the listings. It was better for me to write with a specific purpose in mind because I didn't have a specific style (other than "out-of-date" ) and it was helpful to have a style to focus on as I wrote music for various listings. It also helped me expand a little musically, trying new genres through the various listings.Otherwise, what the others said. Dave

Hello all:)))Jeffe-ddust-Dave-Thanks for taking the time to add to this. Some more good things to consider:)I don't produce or play any instruments, I usually use a demo service.Since It can take a while to get them back, I am really torn about this.I write in mainly Count/Country-Pop-R&B. I am mostly writing Contemporary Country these days.I took advantage of Taxi's free critique by mail service and was very pleased with the way they critiqued the song. I got all 9's(yeah)I think someone mentioned that the critiques service alone was worth it? Something to really think about! Thanks again to all you helpful kind people, I appreciate it:)-Dana

However, if you're getting 9's that's an excellent start!!!! And yes, I find the critique service very helpful.

hi dana,I might add that it also depends on what music your doing and what your goals are.the criteria for library listings is simply diffrent than for nashville country songs.of course you're welcome to post one or two of your tracks so we have an acoustic impression of your songs. one tone can say more than 1000 words..;)hope that helps, martin
