Lyric Writer looking for Composer

Post by nylyrics » Wed Sep 09, 2009 9:21 am

I am looking for an enthusiastic collaborator to craft pop genre songs with single/hit potential. Ideally the starting point would be my lyrics which also may come with my vocal melody used to construct the song. These would just be melody line ideas but may help with the composition. I like to work back and forth and consider my lyrics works in progress. The style of most would be constructed verse rise chorus. It is often the marriage of one good section that gets things moving. If you are interested please let me listen to a song or two and I will be happy to send over a lyric or two to see if a spark ignites.Looking forward to it!Andy

Hi Folks,I have a question. If one person provides the lyrics and melody and the other person provide a clean sounding demo, What percentage of the song would the second person own?Is there a standard formula for how much the musician can expect to be compensated in the event that the song started making money. Or would the musician just expect a flat rate for cutting the demo?If the songwriter is in fact giving up points does anyone know what a fair or standard deal is?Thanks in advance for the answer to this question.

If the writer of the melody & lyrics hired the producer to made the demo and paid them a reasonable amt, there would be nothing more to be paid and the musician/producer would not own any part of the song. In this case it is best to get a work for hire signed. If, however, a demo is then published on a CD or licenced to film/tv, you're getting into muddy waters unless you have a master release. If it was agreed that the writer would share part of the songwriting with the producer to compensate them for making the demo... then that agreement is between the two of you.Others will have additional advice.

Good question glender. I've wondered about this too.I have participated in collaborations where I have provided a complete lyric and melody to someone else's music bed. I wondered about what percentage is mine and what percentage is theirs.Stuart

It seems to me that the percentage would be equal. They produced the musical bed, you provided a melody and words. Unless you paid them for that service.... creating a musical bed is a significant contribution IMO. Hours of work recording and/or sequencing and producing.IMO there's no point in nickel and diming and saying, 'well I wrote some of the words and all the melody, and you only....'. Perhaps with this song, you did a little more. Perhaps with another song, you did a little less. If everything is 50-50, then it balances out in the end.Whatever you decide, it should be decided up front, before the work is done, and put in writing.Under the law, in the absence of a co-writing agreement, all co-writers are considered to have contributed equally to the work.

Thanks for your reply Vikki.I 100% agree that "...creating a musical bed is a significant contribution ..." but in terms of what is copyrightable (as a song) I had really written the entire song...in a sense. Stuart
