Re: mentor lunch?
Well, I'm really sorry if you all have the impression that I'm a newbie looking for instant success. I've been a professional performing musician for 35 years and i love to compose instrumental music, so i joined TAXI and have been submitting to listings with custom compositions to fit each listing for almost two years. All of my submissions have been returned, so I assume my stuff isn't good enough and I've been trying to find ways to change that. At last year's RR I attended every class that I could that pertained to creating, mixing and mastering, met with Robin Frederick (who is amazing) and generally tried to absorb the whole thing as much as I could. I'm hoping to get a forward at some point, but it's sometimes hard to continue with no outside encouragement. In the meantime, I apologize if I seemed arrogant, I'm only frustrated.

Re: mentor lunch?
Being my first time, I'm concerned the event may be a bit competitive and stressful, as much as I look forward to going. Hope its not like a job fair atmosphere with TONS of people, all looking to talk to or hand CDs to the same important person in the room, etc. Are there any tips to make the weekend enjoyable and not discouraging?
If I log off, I may never be able to get back on

Peter,
It will be my first time as well.
Right now my attitude is that I want to meet you guys first and foremost!
Then go in the parking lot, smoke a doobie, get drunk and rock the joint...
...wait...no...wait...that was 30 years ago! (sorta)
Hand out my CD to anyone who might not vomit on it...
...and keep my ears and eyes wide open for tidbits/gems of information.
I'm in this for the LONG HAUL

Re: mentor lunch?
In my opinion, the key to a great Rally experience is to go with an open mind and not think about striking any kind of deal. The Rally is the perfect place to meet other members, build relationships, learn from each other and network. I don't think it is a place to gain instant deals. I'm not saying deals don't happen, but I think it's better to not expect it or attempt it. This will be my fourth Rally, but the first where I have placement credits. None of which came as a result of the Rally. But all of them came as a result of the relationships I furthered at the Rally.
It's an amazing weekend. But just like visiting a foreign country, you can't see/do everything in 3 days. Pick an area that you feel is your weakest and focus on making that better. For me it's the courage to network and meet new people, and the Rally is a great place to build that.
Pick your focus, forget about getting the deal, and enjoy the event.
just my 2 cents
cheers -

2 suggestions...
When you are working on a track for a listing, post a link to your track along with the full listing text in the peer to peer section of the forum and get feedback from other members. It also helps if you do the same for others.
Come to the rally, wear a dot on your page and look for others who also are wearing dots. Then you'll meet other folks from this forum. Most of us hang out a lot in the lounge area near the bar. Get to know some of your fellow members. Nothing like those personal relationships.
Best,

Re: mentor lunch?
It's definitely not that kind of atmosphere, at least not 99.9% of it... It only becomes that way if you make it so by running up to the stage after a panel and trying to force your CD on the panelists (Bad idea!). If you just go to learn, meet peers, and soak up the learning and new relationships, you will have a GREAT weekend and not be discouraged at all.PeterD wrote:Being my first time, I'm concerned the event may be a bit competitive and stressful, as much as I look forward to going. I've found that the only people who are disappointed are those who were looking for some instant success such as being suddenly "discovered" and propelled to riches and/or stardom. If you think of it more as part of a long range learning and development plan, you will find it amazing.
Wear a dot on your badge and look for others wearing the same. You'll find many of us hanging in the lobby lounge area near the bar. I don't know why proximity to the bar is relevant to the choice of where we hang out.

Re: mentor lunch?
Dear Peter, I have heard that a certain number of people will arrive on Wednesday the 5th, precisely in order to have some nice friendly time, and relax and cool down, ... before the go go go, that will start to take place on the 7th and onwards.PeterD wrote: Are there any tips to make the weekend enjoyable and not discouraging?
The registration takes place on Thursday the 6th, I think.
We like your attitude, dear Peter.
PS; and do not forget your dot on your Card, ... it is for Forum Members only ! Smile
