Quote:Yeah, I know I use all 88 keys in every song I play. It's required, as a piano player. Well, I'm not a certified piano player but I still need 88 keys because of keyswitching libraries. They are a drag to use if you have to constantly transpose the keyboard or insert the switches manually i the piano roll editor...

"The "graded" hammer action they talk about on this one means that the keys are heavier at the low end and lighter at the high end... like a grand piano is"I don't think so! The first time I heard about that concept I asked my mom's piano tuner (she's a teacher and he's a piano tuner to the stars - does the LA Phil's pianos, etc.), and he confirmed that it's just psychological. All the keys are the same across the range.

I use a Kurzweil K2500X as a controller. It has a Fatar action, as do the Studio Logic controllers (and for that matter the Deopfler controllers, but theirs are custom).I'm not head over heels in love with it, but it is very good - a definite step above the inexpensive Chinese ones in my opinion, not that there's anything wrong with them *at all* for the price.

but Kurzweil's are for soft hands Nick. I owned 2 of 'em and the damn keyboards just warped, and buckled in the middle. Took about a year for each of them to stop tracking velocity correctly. Then again, I was gigging with mine. Come to think of it, if this is for Martin, then maybe it's a good fit!Quote:I use a Kurzweil K2500X as a controller. Hm. What kind of stand did you put them on, Steve? They're very heavy, and you're only supposed to put the stand arms under a certain point.I don't gig with mine, though - it's just stayed here for the past...oh, maybe seven years (and before that I was using a K250, one of the two that's now retired in my garage). While I'm only a keyboard-as-tool keyboard player, I don't think I have soft hands - I pound the sucker pretty hard from time to time. However I don't doubt that what you're saying is real! And the truth is that real pianists don't like any controller keyboards. They're not 100% right.

Ok, I found a quote on graded hammer action in Steinways:"For comparison, Steinway specifies that for their model, S, M & L pianos, the downweight should taper from 50 grams in the low bass to 47 grams in the high treble, and the upweight should be at least 20 grams."So, evidently there's something to graded hammer action, but 3 grams from low to high doesn't sound like much of a difference. I'd think you've got to be a pretty serious pianist to notice, and those kind of pianists probably don't generally play controllers for their piano sounds.

Even if piano keys themselves are not significantly heavier on the lower end of the keyboard, their feel can be quite different given the size of the strings being hit down there...I think this is more than just a psychological effect, as Nick postulates.I've used a Roland RD700 for some time (and I love its graded hammer action), but this board doesn't fall into Marty's criteria for size or price. Those CME boards do look intriguing...André

Guten Abend Herr Haene I've got a 61 keys controller from Novation - the keys are semi-weighted. My model = Novation ReMOTE 61 was bought just over a year ago - it was quite pricey but I managed to get 50% off in a sale at the time so maybe there are good deals on whatever you go for if you look....This is mine:- http://www.computersandmusic.com/produc ... D=1005Here are their current models:- http://www.novationmusic.com/uk/product ... ?r=promosI can't compare other midi controllers obviously but they do go on about the nice feel to these...Later alligator,Rachel
