Mix opinions please

Post by supahd » Mon Nov 30, 2009 2:55 pm

Well folks, I've posted here and there been with Taxi for a few years and figured it's time to start doing something with it. I've been working on mixing for the past year or so and think I've gotten better but wanted some feedback.I'm thinking of submitting the latter portion of this particular tune for the Korn/Metallica etc listing.. it's a fairly heavy tune. The latest upload and the one I would like some feedback on is called "Stomp"You should be able to get to it from here: http://www.taxi.com/supahdOverall impressions of the mix and the quality, tips tricks etc. Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave - Not exactly my area of expertise but I liked this quite alot. Guitars sound great. Somehow the drums didn't sound aggressive enough. Maybe some compression to get them right up in your face. For this tune the the kick should pound you in the stomach and the snare should slap you across the face! Enjoyed the listen, good luck! eo.

Thanks eo, I suspected as much on the drums but am using some new monitors and wasn't sure how the kick was translating especially... I'll rework the drum mix and post when it's updated (and hopefully better)Dave

Dave,The mix sounds very squashed to me, especially during the long intro. I was also hearing distortion on the guitars in the beginning, and it wasn't entirely pleasant, so I'm not sure it was intended. Are you using compression on the master buss? Might have to back off on the threshold, if so.Vince

Vince,The guitars in the beginning aren't using a "clean" channel, I don't hear any digital clipping distortion so it sounds like you're referring to the particular tone.. different strokes is all I can say to that.I do have a limiter on the master bus, it's the only thing on the master actually... there is actually very little in the way of plugins going on as a whole regarding sound processing. I do have some work to do yet, it doesn't sound "big" enough.Dave

Hey Dave, I think the guitar tone fits the genre . . . my biggest nit is the kick drum. Even with a sub engaged I can really only hear the "click" from the kick drum(s). I'm sure that's not what you intended!

holy smokes.. I've A/B'd it against some heavy music and I'm getting depressed LOL... I think I need to start from scratch on those drum tones and the Bass parts need tightening as well. Thanks for the tips, I'll keep working on it.Dave

it's better but I still don't think it's where you need to be with the low end. I think it's a frequency thing and not just volume but I can't guess where you should go with it. Could be that you need to cut somewhere in the guits to make some room down below. Maybe someone else with better "metal" ear will chime in.
