monitor speaker recommendations?

i'm in the market for a new pair of powered monitors. i have some mackie hr824's which i love, but need something in a smaller size cabinet due to space limitations. recommendations?

I really like my Adam A5's.

When I am in the upgrade mode, I think I will look at the Focals or the new Genelecs. But that is a long way off. And I only say that as I have read really good things about both the Focals and Genelecs.

I have near fields and I'm always cursed with boomy muddy low end.
I love to push the bottom end as much as I can.
I have treated my room and I do use reference mixes which often saves me from wasting cd's for my car.
Will a better pair of monitors fix that issue, or are subs the answer ?
I've been debating whether to just getting an iPod dock for quick referencing instead of upgrading my monitors.

I don't have a sub - and I am interested in what others have to say on the subject. One thing that has helped me, I added a cheap set of consumer computer speakers and run a mix through them as well and see how the bass sounds. They are Auratones, but I think it works.

anyone use monitors with ribbon tweeters? i am told they are easier on your ears for long sessions, and reproduce the breathy aspect of vocals really well.

The Adams have a ribbon tweeter - I believe. I do like the sound of them very much. I don't do a lot - very little actually, with vocals, so I can't speak to it very well. But I have done long sessions with them and don't feel tired of listening.

They are very low on my "to upgrade" list. And I may not replace them at all. I bought them sound un-heard(?) as I didn't have the time or local dealer to go listen. I am very happy with them, but I would have liked to compare them to others. That is what I will do the next time I am in the market. Make the time to go and listen to a number of different monitors to judge.

I recently read an article where they talked about how near fields cannot accurately capture the 30-50k area. too much of that can ruin the bottom.
I have a pair of Yorkvilles which aren't bad , but not high end by any means. We're supposed to get to know our speakers by listening to
pro mixes to get an idea of how they sound on our monitors. When I do that there is very little bottom end being represented with my near fields.
I guess i need subs.
I've analyzed pro mixes with a level meter and they can vary depending on the style but usually the 30-50 k area is controlled or rolled off.
Treble is another beast. The pro mixers usually have access to some $$$$ analogue eq's which sound sweet even when the treble is cranked.

And do you really mean 30-50k? Wouldn't that mean 30,000-50,000 kHz? We can't hear up there anyway - that is dog territory.

regarding the 30-50 khtz, range, I think my Adams are rated down to 45 kHz. So I do miss info below that. But I have gotten used to them after listening a lot of other systems and reference mixes.
