yeah, its almost a necessity to have decent flat response monitors (with reasonable room treatments so they're accurately telling you whats going on), a low end like the auratone or NS10s, and for best mono mixes, a single mid-rangey speaker (since the phantom center image on pair of speakers isn't really the same thing...) and don't forget: some ear buds. walking out of the room also helps get a sense of the mix as well as playback through cheap boomboxes/TVs and your car stereo... seems like a lot of places but between mixing and mastering, there's really no shortcuts to making sure your final product is really going to translate well...
