Re: ONOFFON
For today's ONOFFON SSP of the Day, I've chosen an email I received just yesterday - I decided to introduce our music to a jazz station on Live365, aTTeNTioN sPaN raDiO, so I sent them a link to our music for possible airplay consideration. This is what they had to say -"Ha! Too late! I already discovered you on EMusic awhile back. I downloaded "Shadowglass", "Mardi Gras" and "Opus". Those three tracks are being heard on ASR1. In fact, your stats for the three tracks: Artist / Album / Title / Plays / Drops / Loss%Onoffon / Your Mind / Shadowglass / 173 / 0 / 0Onoffon / Your Mind / Mardi Gras / 93 / 0 / 0Onoffon / Your Mind / Opus / 241 / 5 / 2Only 5 disconnects out of 507 total listeners. Not bad at all. ;<} I'll check out the other two. Peace, Bob "bamman" MillsaTTeNTioN sPaN raDiO"How cool is that ? Already receiving decent airplay from him finding our music on EMusic! Now THAT'S the way the system is supposed to work. In the independent music world, you only have so much control of your ability to get your music out there. Then, you can only hope, it takes on a life of its own. Huge thanks to Bob and the whole aTTeNTioN sPaN raDiO staff for playing our music...

Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day brings you more GB reviews of our song, "Weekend in Montreal" -GarageBand.comONOFFON - "Weekend in Montreal""Great Sax WorkGreat sax work! Very impressive. I really enjoyed this tune. The tempo changes enhanced the whole mood and the rythym section was locked in. But the sax really did it for me. Great tone and "old school" enough to keep me interested. The guitar held everything together without being intrusive. Great work and I wish you great success."Extra Credit: Melody, Mood.- kfix2000 Wadsworth, Ohio"Loved the saxSome good saxophone work. Actually I really liked the sax in this piece. Some nice variety in this song with the pace changes. Keep up the good work."- AlfaCharlieEcho Toronto, Ontario, Canada"cool, catsthis track is nice as far as ambience goes. it would work well in one of those delicious little smokey clubs, or in a restaurant, for chilling to."- fuchsiashock Toronto, Ontario, Canada"Great soundThe sax sounds like Bob Berg...great sound!! I hear some Mike Stern influence in this. The guitar should double the sax melody... just a suggestion. cool stuff."- oothebluegplyer Milford, Connecticut"Saxarific! (slightly cheezy?)Excellent sax playing... Neat chord progression"- Kalko Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada"Love itThis was great...adding to my playlist."Extra Credit: Production, Melody, Beat, Mood, Originality, Most Rocking Track.- DefEar Victoria, British Columbia, Canada"smoothvery delightful smooth piece for the cocktail early evening...the sax is quite brilliant, could work on trying to make it flow even better, some part of it sounds a bit harsh and the beat kinda getting chopped somewhere.....but overall, a very sophisicated piece."Extra Credit: Production, Melody.- siya Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada"CoolWow.... cool stuff.... Nice saxophone work....."- CoffeeBoy Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada"sax to the maxVery progressive...sorry I get a bit nervous listening to the fast paced part. The transitions from each part are quite severe. Ability on sax is exceptional."Extra Credit: Production.- rawleyalex San Marino, California "Impressive trumpet part!In introduction, I just want to say that the trumpet was very very impressive! That trumpettist is very good in my opinion. This jazz is very good in general, I like the fast and agressive part at the beggining and the more slow relaxing part after it. That song would be so great in a movie soundtrack! Good job guys!"Extra Credit: Production, Melody, Mood, Originality, Best Feel Good Track.- Popolzzz Laval, Quebec, CanadaHahahahaha... although this last guy said some great things, it worries me that he doesn't know the trumpet he liked so much was a tenor sax... As always, we thank all those who take the time to leave their opinions of our music...

Quote:Let's hope to god it's just the language barrier... One can only hope... And now, more SSP Today's ONOFFON SSP of the Day is a small collection of opinions and comments I received from various individuals - most prominent in this grouping is the illustrious Derek Sivers - he has always been a wonderful supporter of our music and the best friend an independent musician could possibly have -Subject: Re: Von...From: CD Baby <cdbaby@cdbaby.com>"Hey the guys from SMOKSTICK (a CD Baby band) were here the other night and we listened to your whole CD. It was the first & only thing from my catalog they wanted to hear.Derek Sivers, president, CD Baby"Subject: MP3.com viewer email"hey guys, i have been mezmerized by inside my soul the past week. what a soul wrenching song.....can you mail me the guitar tab and chords for it?thanks.....ralph...blues player from chicago"Subject: Well? Im Floored =)"Its killer!!!!!!!! Im speechless =) I have just been so busy that I totally forgot to get back to ya. Its my old age!!!!! I think you all have matured into the sound!!! The 2nd track is my favorite. I told you what I think of the art work! People get BIGGGGG $$$$$ for what you did. I see nothing but arena's in your future. Im afraid to say things like the next Weather Report, Zappa, Floyd, Tubes, I dont want to put you in a category because your not in any. Except the one your creating. =)PeaceTony"Subject: Your Mind"Hi Von!I've listened to the CD 3-4 times now....very nice!I think my favorite track (believe it or not) is Bebe's Song!I don't know why.....I just love the chorus & the whole "vibe"....very cool!Shadowglass also really stuck out for me....cool.I like the melody & the performance of the sax in Mardi Gras...another nice tune (reminded me of older Spyro Gyra)....I mean that in a good way....not plaguristic! I don't know how I would "catagorize" your stuff....but that's a good thing! Sometimes it reminds me a little of Brand X....sometimes the guitar reminds me of Steve Hackett or Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult). Actually, some of the "rock-tinged" songs remind me a little of BOC....I mean that in a good way too! BOC is actually one of the few "hard rock" bands I like....and some of the textures with the male/female vocals, guitars, chords, riffs, etc...remind me of that a little.Well, enough comparisons....I know most musicians hate them!....I just use them as a "point of reference"...that's all! In conclusion....nice work!....performance, writing, production...good job!Take care,Jeff"Subject: ONOFFON"Von,To tell you the truth, that article with your interview has gone more places than a hungry dog with no home. I think it was all print - No Cover Magazine, Collegiate Monthly 101, a book by the name of Music For Fun and Profit (of which I will surely get you a copy) ... I don't know of any Internet sites where it has been posted. I haven't even thought to post it on SpinRecords.com! I must do so immediately (well, realistically next week). When that is done I will send you the link. What you are doing with ONOFFON is truly defining the Internet music revolution. Who else is? There are many opportunities these days. You seem to be exploring them and your lessons are quite valuable to other artists. We should discuss how you might share your experiences with a world that is slowly waking up to itself.Craig"I know...I know... opinions are like... But, as independent artists, earning these opinions, one by one, is a long arduous task. We don't have the benefit of mass promotion on radio, video and print all at the same time. You touch one person at a time. To continually inspire these types of responses is what drives us forward...

Re: ONOFFON
Today's ONOFFON SSP of the Day comes from a couple of listeners from the very earliest days of our presence on GarageBand -GarageBand.comONOFFONFrom: lucia_memberReceived: 4/25/00 01:48 PM"damn! von, excellent work! i could go on and on about it... but i'm just going to say that i'm going to buy your cd right now.thanks for putting your stuff here!-holly"From: BernieReceived: 4/27/00 06:45 PM"My god man, why aren't you guys signed ?? I can't believe the sh*thead reviews you guys are getting! Steely Dan and Men at Work ?? If there has to be a comparison, I would think Spyro Gyra would be a little more accurate. But, you guys are even more diverse than that. I am thoroughly impressed and you're right, there should be a jazz genre and you guys would dominate it, I'd bet.I've met some very cool people since the backstage thing started and found some great tunes. Your's are the first jazz tunes that I've heard and I'll tell ya, it's an honor for me to correspond with musicians of your caliber. Thanks again, BernieP.S. oh yeah, my reviews of your stuff: I'M NOT WORTHY!!!"From: BernieReceived: 4/27/00 11:24 PM"Just thought I'd tell you, my brother came in while I was writing reviews for your stuff. He's our singer/guitarist, I was downloading the MP3 to Mardi Gras (stream just doesn't do it justice) and when it was done I played it for him. He felt the same way I did about your band. Just wanted to let you know there are some of us that have the respect for you that you deserve and feel fortunate to hear your music. Thanks for putting up with the idiots.Bernie"Our sincere thanks to lucia_member and especially to Bernie for the inspirational words of support. When you do original music - you have a choice. You can try to play the game and follow the formula and get that one hit and sound like one of a million other bands that do the same thing - or you do something that no one else does and forge your own sound and create your own musical journey. If you do the latter - you will either be recognized and create a legacy that will inspire others to strive to achieve individuality and instrumental virtuosity or you will die in obscurity, unappreciated for the paths you've chosen. We are not lemmings... and to answer Bernie's first question, THAT is why we are not signed...

Re: ONOFFON
ONOFFON's SSP of the Day comes from BroadJam - a wonderful review site that works hand in hand with TAXI -In early June, BroadJam created a sub-genre to Latin - Latin Jazz. From the beginning of that chart, ONOFFON's "Mardi Gras" has been no lower than #3 and today has gone to #2 -http://www.broadjam.com/topten/genres/l ... .asp"Mardi Gras" has also been in and out of the Latin Top 10 for a total of more than 60 days. Today it re-entered, charting at #9 -http://www.broadjam.com/topten/genres/latin/latin.aspI appreciate the platform that BroadJam provides the independent artist and applaud the overall level of professionalism displayed by most of its members. Thanks BroadJam...

Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day comes from Demo Universe on our first CD, Surrender Now - Demo Universehttp://www.demouniverse.com/review.php?did=1161ONOFFON - Surrender Now"A diverse set of songs by this L.A.-based trio, ranging from the odd-time blues-rock of "I Don't Give No..." to the straight-up jazz of "Weekend In Montreal" and the 12-minute prog odyssey "Remember Only...", Von Babasin (bass), Don Lake (guitar/vocals) and Dave Goode (drums/percussion) are superb players and imaginative composers and the quality of this recording is top notch. This style of music may be long out of fashion (try finding Brand X at your local mall) but when done well it still has the power to transport. Visit their web site to hear RealAudio samples, see a QuickTime video and order the CD if it strikes your fancy."Thanks to Demo Universe...

Re: ONOFFON
Today's ONOFFON SSP of the Day is an immediate return to Demo Universe for their take on our second CD, Your Mind -Demo Universehttp://www.demouniverse.com/review.php?did=1604ONOFFON - Your Mind"More musical flights of fancy from the marvelous ONOFFON, whose Surrender Now LP made an impression in the winter of 1997-98. It's probably easier to stuff a pigeon into a hole than to categorize this combo, but if I owned a record store, I'd file them on the left end of rock with a good view of the jazz department. Zappa is clearly a prime influence on ONOFFON, albeit less for his strict orchestral exercises than an atmosphere of sophisticated musical subversion. With the possible (and regrettable) exception of the lascivious and silly "Wet Legs," Your Mind has no obvious "single," but that's beside the point. Babasin, Lake and Goode (BLG, now there's a band name) are great musicians with good ideas having fun doing what they love, and who can argue with that?"I love that phrase 'sophisticated musical subversion' - who can argue with that?...
