How to get song info to show up??

Post by adrianne76 » Sun Aug 16, 2009 6:22 am

Hi all,A music supervisor asked me to send her instrumental versions of the tunes she has of mine. Although I entered all of the info in i-tunes and uploaded the info into the gracenote database, I am having two major problems:1) She wants the files via You-Send-It. When I send them via You-Send-It, only the track name shows up in i-tunes. No artist name, etc, which is very bad for someone who is very busy and has a gazillion songs in their database. Even if I try "get CD track names," it doesn't work.2) When I put the CD of instrumentals into i-tunes and the gracenote database gives me options, only the original CD comes up as an option. I need the instrumental version of the CD, which has it's own name and "instrumental" added to every track name, to come up instead. The gracenote database has this info, but it isn't coming up as an option.if anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it. Opportunities like this don't come along very often and I really want to do it right! Thanks!!Adrianne

How is it that you're trying to send something via YouSendIt over iTunes? YouSendIt only transmits to email addresses. Other than that, I'm not understanding your question...?

Yeah, you send mp3s (or wavs or AIFFs) via yousendit to her email address. That's what she's asking for. She may not use iTunes to catalogue her work.If she signs the tracks, you will be asked for all the info about the track(s) and it will be in the contract.

She is a music supervisor, not a publisher/library. She doesn't need to "sign" the tracks. She wants to add them to her i-tunes library so she can try to use them in her shows. If/when she uses them, then she will send me paperwork for the uses. She asked for the files via YouSendIt, but she also told me that she uses i-tunes to catalog/store all of her music. So it is pertinent that, after she downloads the songs from You-Send-it, they show up accurately in her i-tunes library.Any suggestions?

My understanding of the CDDB is that it is designed to recognize CDs and not individual songs.I just sent myself an mp3 via yousendit. I'm on Windows at work and I have itunes on my work computer. When I "right click" on the mp3 file and then go to the "Summary" tab and then choose "Advanced", I see:ArtistAlbum TitleYearTrack NumberGenreLyricsAnd then under Description it shows:TitleCommentsThen there's an Audio section as well with sample rate, etc.I re-opened the file in iTunes and all the info made it through. You should be able to re-submit the track names of the CD by putting the CD in your computer, selecting the CD, re-naming them there and then going to "Advanced/Submit CD track names". Then when the client opens up iTunes and puts in your CD, she will be prompted with 2 options, the original CD and the instrumental CD. That's my understanding of the way it "should" work.I don't know if there's an issue with putting the song info in on a mac and then having windows read it or vice/versa. I wasn't able to test that. Good luck!!Mazz

There are a couple very large production companies that license a ton of stuff from me and I will generally send songs to them in mp3 form via yousendit.com Generally speaking, you put the song info in the header info of the mp3. I don't know how to do that in itunes ('cause I hate that program). Generally speaking, you enter that information when you convert your file to an mp3. It has nothing to do really with the grace notes online database. That said, generally speaking, I've found it best to just NOT INCLUDE ANY INFO and just make the file name the song title exactly as it should be (how I want it in the cue sheets and how it's registered with ASCAP). This makes the song title header information the file name (minus the ".mp3"). The reason I do it this way is because different music coordinators/supervisors enter different info based on their system when they send the mp3s to their editors and I don't like to make it harder for them.Take all the mp3s and put them in a zip folder. Include a TXT file with all the songwriter/publisher/master rights/etc. info that they need in that file. The reality is that there is no convenient way to include that in the mp3 header info ANYWAY. Then send that whole zip file via yousendit.comI hope that helps.

Assuming you've converted your CD of WAV files to MP3 in iTunes, (and not some other format, like AAC or whatnot) right-click on the title of the file in iTunes, enter the info for each song (you can shift click to select a group of songs so they all get the same album title/artist/release date, then enter the info for individual songs, saves a few keystrokes) Copy the album folder to your desktop from your iTunes folder, zip it and upload to Yousendit from there. The metadata will survive the trip, it's part of the file; the super won't need to enter anything manually, she can just import the files into her iTunes. If she uses something she'll most likely have you send a WAV.

When I right-click on a wav file, it does not have anywhere to enter the info. So, for you folks who send wavs to music supervisors, etc, how do you get the proper info on there? Thanks!
