Virtual Bass Guitar

Post by liamkelly » Mon Dec 17, 2007 8:52 am

'Lo allI badly need to upgrade my Bass-on-Demand package. Being a Cubase user I thought that Steinberg's Virtual Bassist plug in might be the answer but having read many reviews I now don't think it is.I remember that Matt and Aub exchanged ideas a few months ago on this but I can't find the thread. If anyone can point me to the thread I'd appreciate it. Alternatively, any ideas on versatile, quality VST bass packages for rock applications would be appreciated. Thanks and happy holidays to all. Easy on the egg-nog!Liam

I found that with tweaking there are quite realistic bass lines possible with today's vst-i.for me as a guitar player it's just easier to plugin my bass into a great d.i. box and play - and I think a "real" bass often gives a little extra to a track. for me it's also way faster than tweaking a midi track/instrument.if you go for a vst-i I'd suggest a low latency with your audio-card - everything above 12 ms is annoying in my experience.good luck, martin

I agree and disagree with the real vs midi, its genre specific I have found, a midi bass in a rap track if you do the intonations and stuff to give it feeling, like actually "play" the midi bass, is at times more fitting than an actual bass, same with dance tracks, for rock and stuff I play it tho. I was mainly using the kontakt 4 library of bass's (I like the orchestra instruments, and you know hip hop, you can put in the orchestra if you want) tho I found a lot of the time, its less what program is playing the bass, and more about the intonation of the playing, just cause bass tends to be a more visceral instrument, if you practice really leaning into your playing on the midi controller and maybe look up some emotion emphasizing techs for midi, you might get really good results on top of the new samples and stuff, cause bass is one of the few instruments, where you can seriously play 1 note sometimes over and over, and just rock the house with it, cause its how you play it.

@milfus: sure, it depends on the style. I found it can also be cool to play real bass on styles that are not typically played with real bass - for example: a couple of weeks ago I wrote a uptempo, action-oriented instrumental with synth phrases and a drum n bass-kind of beat. the real played bass on it sounds very cool to me and a little bit "unusual".there are many ways to achieve the goal, and they're individual - at the end of the day it counts how is SOUNDS - nobody cars if you played the guitar with just one finger and cuted it to hell untill you had a cool phrase to loop (...yes stick, I'm quoting you ). if it sounds right, it is right.cheers, martin

I agree with Martin about using an actual bass to get the authentic sound. However, I just purchased Trilogy and with good programming, it's hard to tell the difference.

Note that "VSTi" is very 90s. VST is only one format, so today real men and women call them virtual instruments.Hey, that's a great name for a magazine...
