Writers Block?
So what do you guys do when you get writers block? (if you do) I usually have to just stop trying to write and go do something. (Kind of like right now, I'm going to go on a hike) I'm curious how others deal with it.I also found this site, it's got some great ideas. http://www.lyricideas.com/Andy

I read a lot and watch tv and go to movies and keep an ear open for interesting conversations and basically wait it out, knowing that it always passes.Claire

I also get inspiration by taking nature walks. I once heard a melody while walking that opened up the place I was stuck, on an orchestral piece I was writing. For pop/rock, SOUNDS really inspire me. I scroll through synths, samples etc. until a sound, usually a weird one, piques my interest. It kinda clears out the cobwebs! Good luck,Ern

Re: Writers Block?
My oldest son just recently purchased the "Best of the Modern Drummer Festival 1997-2006". We both have been constantly watching the "Dream Theater Medley" with John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, John Myong, and Mike Portnoy, as this is probably the BEST 12 minutes of music on both DVDs, in our opinion. Watching these guys work a song for 12 minutes, had me totally in awe! The things they did on their instruments, and the sounds they made, was more than enough inspiration for me! That Jordan Rudess is probably one of the BADDEST keyboard players that I've seen in a LOOONNNG time. That dude is awesome! My point is, when I get the block, I throw in some DVDs of concerts, or musical learning DVDs, etc..., and try and draw some inspiration from performances. Most of the time, for me anyway, it usually works. Give it a shot, it just might stir up those creative juices! HTH.ibanez468

Re: Writers Block?
Ive seen Dream Theatre twice. Once in a small venue and those are still the most incredible shows ive seen from a musician POV.Petrucci is just amazing. Hell they all are.Not boasting but I dont get writers block. I can "write" about anything. what I get is creativity block. Coming up with fresh twists on everyday ideas is hardest for me. My mind is always turning but getting cohesive thoughts is tough.Riding in my truck with the radio off is my best inspiration. No outside influences. Just the hum of the tires and my own strange thoughts. M~

Hey guys, Yeah, I guess "creativity block" is more of what I get. I can write about anything to, I can rhyme and structure any song, but whether it is creative, fresh and marketable is another story. I do the same thing with the Phil Keaggy Live DVD. He is a freak of nature. Always leaves me awed. If this doesn't get creative juices flowing I don't know what does. At 2:20 is when he starts playing with his looping machine.

Got to talk to him a few times, and he is just as great of a person as he is a musician.
Find something you love to do so much you will do it for free, and learn to do it so well they will pay you for it.

Yes he is, he's an amazing person. And he must be an amazing guitarist if Jimi Hendrix said he was the best guitarist he'd ever met.In reference to your e-mail...I also listen to classical music too. That helps me broaden my musical approach when I get in ruts too.
