If "The Beatles" was a single album...

Post by king1042 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 3:58 am

Beatles producer George Martin wanted them to stop writing filler and make the follow up to Seargent Pepper another great landmark album - but of course they didn't....."Maxwells Silver Hammer" et al.If you had the job of choosing 15 of the tracks that ended up on "The Beatles" (white) double LP as a killer single album, what would they be and what would be the running order?Just for fun & LOLMartin

Hey Martin,Man, that's a tough one since I like every song, with maybe the exception of Ringo's "Don't Pass Me By" LOL!The White Album is my favorite Beatles album, just because of its diversity. And I'm not alone --- NFL hall-of-fame wide receiver Steve Largent was once asked which record he would most cherish after his career was over.He answered "The Beatles White Album!" But, I'll play along after I think about it!Ern

O.K. --- I thought about it! It would be easier to list the songs I would've cut, and the reasons why, in order:Back In The U.S.S.R. --- A couple reasons. 1. Ringo didn't play on it, and it was basically a Paul ego trip. 2. It pales in comparison to the Lennon songs that follow it.Wild Honey Pie --- A throwaway that you have to be stoned to like.Happiness Is A Warm Gun --- An obvious reason (R.I.P. John).Piggies --- I'm not a fan of George's vocal style.Don't Pass Me By --- Simplistic and dumb songwriting and singing. Nice fiddle, though. Why Don't We Do It In The Road --- Funny, but another Paul ego trip.Julia --- Beautiful song, but Lennon was obviously choked up when he double-tracked the vocal, and it's not his best.Revolution 1 --- I really like this, but the original uptempo version had a lot more energy. That's it! --- I remember listening to Revolution #9 when I was a kid, and thinking "WTF?" But now I think it's brilliant.Ern

I wouldn't change anything, other than to maybe re-sequence the album in order to include the single version of Revolution, and maybe Hey, Jude. Also, you can't have Honey Pie without Wild Honey Pie, they're bookends, as are several other song pairs on the record; I love Sir George, he's like a third grandfather to me, but he just didn't get it this time 'round. Oh, and from my perspective, the fiddle on don't Pass Me By was just awful, but perfect in the context, as I suspect it was intended.

The fiddle is the only part of "Don't Pass Me By" that I like. I love The Beatles, but that song is like getting bashed with a hammer for three minutes.

Thanks for joining in guys, interesting to see how much The Beatles still mean to people....I'd just drop all the comedy stuff myself - (I've just realised that I mentioned "Maxwells" which is on Abbey Road! Whoops!)I also thought I was the only one to come up with this idea (just re-read "Revolution In The Head" y'see) but hats off to Mark for beating me to it...maybe we should do "Blonde on Blonde" next....?Martin
