Some of it is the vocal inflections where Billy Joel sings like Jagger, but there are a few songs off the top of my head that are REAL similar:1.) 19th Nervous Breakdown. Billy takes the verse melody, starts on the 3rd rather than the 5th, and it's almost identical.2.) Jumpin' Jack Flash. Same pentatonic mode, basically.3.) Get Off Of My Cloud. See above.Listen, I'm not saying he's "consciously" stealing. But George Harrison said he wasn't either, and lost a huge settlement to the writers of "He's So Fine!" Ern

Ern Thanks Ern!I think of the tunes you mentioned, 19th Nervous Breakdown is the closest.George Harrison lost the law suit because all the chords (except that one diminished chord) and melody were pretty much identical. Often a song has a verse very similar to another song but when it gets to the "change" it is different. In Harrison's song, in the "change" it continued just like "He's So Fine".Jewel had a song a few years ago that had a verse melody that to me sounded just like Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". I think it was called "Standing Still". To me, it was a rip-off-- way too similar. But once again, the chorus was at least different.Just found this:http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/i ... ike-songs/ Casey

That's great. My old diving coach was the coach from USC (even though I was only 12 twelve at the time). I even got to attend the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships a couple of times, as his guest...but I wound up passing on the scholarship.I still consider USC to be my alma mater (that I never attended). OH MY, no no no no no no no!!! I can see how that came across wrong. I was referring to the poor souls who actually WERE in the Trojan Marching Band, and how WE - The Mighty Oregon Fighting Duck Marching Band - would make up the words to their one and only stands tune.By the way - just came back from watching the Ducks walk all over the Utah State Aggies yesterday 66-24 (and boy, do those players look silly waddling down the field ) but Utah put up a good game. Being ranked #119 out of 119 ranked teams, what have you got to lose?Kathleen

Drew,HaHaHaHa! Yup, "Brandy" is one of those "It's so bad it's good" songs! But NOW --- God help me --- It's "Night Fever" by the Bee Gees! I HATED disco back then, but I heard it the other day, and it, uh, ALMOST sounded good! Maurice Gibb's bass parts are really cool, though. R.I.P. Maurice. --- But earlier on, when Robin Gibb sang "I Started A Joke," now THAT was a tearjerking recording. What a great, if strange, vocal!Ern

He said "But they did want to hear it".Yup, I'll never forget when I was a pre-teen and built a Heathkit Electronic Workshop. I wired up a radio and ran copper wire all through the trees in our backyard as an antenna. One of the best stations I got (from Michigan) was WBZ in Boston. The first time I heard "Walk Like A Man" by the Four Seasons I about fell out of bed with my little earphone on! I couldn't believe it, how the lead singer just "spoke" to me with his falsetto, and the rest of the band sang like real men.I just listened recently to the "Hits" of the early Four Seasons, and just love their poor-boy, working class lyrics and attitude. They REALLY influenced Springsteen. They were all about class-consciouness, and how poor people were looked down upon. (I grew up poor, as my dad was a music teacher with a lousy salary, and had to play gigs on the weekend to support my mom and 5 kids). The song "Rag Doll" almost brings me to tears --- I wore "hand-me-down" clothes from my rich cousins, and lived in a rich, white conservative town.Man, those songs are just great, as are the arrangements and singing. Too bad Frankie Vallie didn't write them (two other guys in the band did, and are poor guys turned rich guys, I'm sure!).Ern

My son, Jake, and I were driving to Texas last Saturday after the H'cane and that song was burned onto one of his CDs (I wonder where he got his good taste in music?) along with some newer crap (I wonder where....), that's what got us talking about them and the Bee Gees. If I remember right, Frankie had to stop singing because he lost his hearing.I showed Jake this thread last night and he said "I could add something terrible to this list of stuck-in-the-head songs. Last year you mentioned a song/artist I was not familiar with so I found it on YouTube for a listen. For a month I was singing "tiptoe through the tulips" with a mental picture of Tiny Tim and it nearly drove me crazy. I'll never forgive you for suggesting that song to me."Hey, that's what dads are for, right?

everyday...EVERY FREAKIN' DAY I wake up with another song stuck in my head. Sometimes it's one of mine. Sometimes one I heard yesterday. Other times I haven't heard it in years. When I sit and write my Morning Pages, the first thing I write is a line from the song, and label it T.L. (todays lyric). Somehow that helps get it out of my head.
