Mom had a blast, and thought it was really funny when some guy asked her if she wanted to get high. She and my Dad were about 51 at the time. Anyway, I was not there of course, but have heard her tell the story a bunch. She also was became an Allman Bros fan later on - still is!LOL, cute story about your Mom, Anne....your Mom sounds really cool!As far as musicians go, I guess you could say I'm married to one now...he's learned to play the banjo, so it's unleased his wild side....we'll about as wild as you can get for a mechanical engineer who's been known to wear a pocket protector.Yikes!

I have been trying a lot of new stuff, and harder stuff (playing more myself, less loops, writing lyrics etc) so it's really fine that I'm not getting forwards on it, but then again, I'm not getting any forwards...and I like those!Growth hurts and I'd love ta know why. I'm not getting tremendous amounts of forwards either honey but hey, we've entered new territory, we're challenging ourselves.....those are good things that'll pay off in the long run.We gotta work on that one tune too. I'm almost done with finals (I'll be off the hook this weekend, yay!), let's talk!SquidlyP.S. I bet your mom would be a hoot to have gotten high with back then.

Speaking again of "Whipping Post"...I made the mistake of playing "Whipping Post" at a family party as a substitute for a love song I wrote for my wife. Someone requested my love song but I couldn't remember the words so I thought it would be funny to make the switch.Long story short: Everyone laughs whenever they remember how hystical that was. Everyone, except you-know-who. -Allen

Ahhh, a thread near and dear to my heart. For the first few years on this board I felt like I was the only southern rock aficionado around. When I was in high school I used to hitch hike around the south to watch the Allman Brothers play, they came to New Orleans a few times and I even watched the jam all day in a City Park free concert one Sunday. I could never find other band members to put together a southern rock band back then "Hey, we HAVE to play 'Smoke on the Water'But the last and current band I put together is southern rock, it's just about all I'm willing to play now (with a few popular dance tunes mixed in). Everyone hits the dance floor for 'Melissa', even the country music fans love much of the old southern rock, though we try not to play too much Skynyrd stuffWe play Molly Hatchet's version of 'Dreams', it's much more popular and really fun to play.I think 'Blue Sky' is another GREAT song played by the Allman Bros., as well as all the instrumentals written by Dicky Betts. I hope to play this music til the day I die.
It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere

Hey, good story about "Whipping Post," Allen.....yeah, not a lot of wives would find that 'romantic', so I can understand. Hey, Drew....I'm from 'Bama, so I hear you about Southern rock. I was brought up on Led Zep and Pink Floyd too, but there's something special about those Southern rockers. I was also a big Marshall Tucker fan, (the flute was cool) and yeah, Skynrd of course.Molly Hatchet's version of "Dreams" is really good, but there's just something about that Filmore East Version of The Allman Brothers that's unbelievable. I love "Blue Sky and "Melissa" too.....here's some more on the AB list for me:Statesboro BluesIn Memory of Eizabeth ReedOne Way OutAin't Wastin' Time No MoreGlad to hear you're still devoted to playing it.....I don't know about you, but I see a big trend going on in Nashville lately, (well, it has been going on for several years).....country is becoming more Southern rock now, so there may be a revival before it's over with. In my younger and wilder days, I went to a few of Greg's concerts.....of course, Berry Oakley and Duane had passed away by then. I'll confess I haven't seen the present Allman Brothers. I've always wanted to go. They have concerts here at the Oak Mountain amphi-theater. I don't know anything about his new band. Has he reunited with Dicky Betts...is Betts even still alive? Sorry, that's how out of it I am now, LOL. I did hear where Butch Truck's nephew was playing with them. I haven't kept up for quite a while. I remember they did have a new song out some years back, but I can't remember it now....oh well, I don't guess anything can match their earlier greatness.

"as well as all the instrumentals written by Dicky Betts. .."How can anybody NOT love a song that talks to Mr. Bluebird?Blue Sky - great tune, and the kind of lyrics that I jot down when walking but never thought anyone would like - then I heard this tune while driving the other day and reminded myself that "IT DOESN"T HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED TO BE GOOD!!"Squids - a definite YES on collaborating on my (or any) song. I can't tell you how psyched I would be to work on it some more. I also have another one in my head that the lyrics started coming up on. A friend of mine (actually, a client recording his guitar work at my home studio) compares writing music to a making a mental and emotional poop. I think this is not a bad analogy!

I agree! The simpler, the better. Easier for folks to remember (this is of course if we're talking about vocal tunes) and much easier for them to sing to. Not everyone's got xtina's chops and that's a fact.

Who's xtina?I have been playing with alternate guitar tunings and now I see why so much of their stuff was so mellow! I'll post the little song I am working on as soon as its on disc - thanks for getting this thread going. It was exactly the little bit of inspiration to just "go with the flow" that I needed. PS - my Mom says hi to all you Allman fans out there. I saw her today. Yes, she would be a lot of fun at a concert. She said she didn't smoke anything when offered, but she did really like the smell
