Ted, depending on the people you are surrounded with...As someone once said,"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, and great minds talk about ideas."I know Pat and Pete professionally. I've been to plenty of their workshops in Nashville, seen them around town, etc. They are supremely insightful when it comes to the music biz.I think it was Pete who submitted the idea that the most successful songwriters don't just live life... More than that, they observe life. I've always been more of an observer. I'm really used to the lame conversations, but I'm always aware that a song can be bourne from those conversations. The thing that sucks is I have to force myself to socialize. I just hate to be in those lame, social--ettiquet--driven, politically correct, manufactured-content situations. I prefer honest, unobligated conversations... People with ideas... People with the same outlook -- No personal agendas, etc... Problem is, those folks are so very few and far between...

so, I heard the book is pretty jesus-centric, which im not too thrilled about (i dont have a problem with christians or even god or jesus, but you know) but I decided to bank on your advice and bought the complete artists way, as I heard it will like change your life, and it was 10 bucks including shipping, so I figured I would give it an honest go.We shall see wether or not its the kick i needand hb, I totally agree with you, I socialize to a point, I will talk if I have something say, or someone gives me something worth talking about, I noticed though, If you do abstain, people with nothing to say seem to filter out, and the ones who generally talk when they have things to stay, are the ones who will actually just stand there silent with you, cause they know you arent being mean, you just dont have anything worth saying at that moment, and neither do they, so you wait until a worthwile thought comes up. from doing this, I have boiled down most of my inner circle to very insightful, almost scary wise, very capable people, in id say...2 years or so, but I have the unique position now, to where I can do something insane, I mean nuts, and discuss it with them at length, and they will hold off judgement until I finish explaining, and if it makes sense, they let it slide, one might even try it with me. so you know, worth it *shrug*

Interesting thing about 'idle chatter' from people....and as Hooks said, 'being observant.' I'm an observer of life and people too. When I'm at a party, I'm always the one scoping everyone out. I've always been that way, even as a child. All kinds of people interest me. I'm introverted, but I also like variety and people...different takes on life, even if I don't agree with everyone I meet. The other day, on CMT, a woman said something totally funny on one of those shows which feature songs in programs like "The 100 Best Country Cheating Songs of All Time." I took what she said, and now I have a chorus and hook line for a new song.....other CMT shows have provided me with songs too.....they sometimes gets comedians to make comments, and this has been very useful to me.I don't really try to find hooks from people's conversation, rather, when people do say something weird, funny, dumb or whatever, it just hits me right away...I say to myself, "wow, that's a great idea for a song."

Ooh, Hook, that's good.This is a thought.....so when everyone goes to the rally, do they all jes sit and observe each other or is it more like "ahhh, weekend off!" and party till the cows come get 'em?If a writer falls in the forest and no one hears him.......

yeah that really insightful, ive been puttin it to practice, just never to wordsI dunno,i think at the rally I am probably gonna be more like shell shocked, because i allready do little voices in my head for all you people, and if they dont match up imma be like, this is wrong, these are clones

Be there or be human... And HB, don't hear me wrong. I LOVE their "101 Songwriting Wrongs..." book and am in the process of reading it for the 3rd or 4th time right now. But I had JUST finished the chapter about paying attention to those around you, so I thought I'd give it a try (even more so than I already do...people watching has been a favorite hobby of mine for years). But the bunch that was yelling and screaming at the table next to me might've had a collective I.Q. of 30-35. (That's purely a guess on my part ) And they kept adding more to the group and getting louder and louder AND moving closer and closer to my "personal space" boundaries...Hence, it was MUCH smarter --not to mention SAFER-- to voice my horror and revulsion HERE, among heads I can relate to, than to suddenly turn on them and explode.I love observation. But more and more, from a wider distance...Ted

yeah i noticed, i like observing people i can relate with, most people are more in the waste of time category
